Bombed in interview

I have just done a really bad interview.

It doesn’t usually happen and I prepared but my mind just went blank. Awful migraine today from 5am but I didn’t want to miss the interview….

Anyone else ever had the tongue tied unable to get their words out?

I feel like a right plum.

This happened to me yesterday.
The first question and I just had a complete blank. I had to say sorry can we start that again - twice. I recovered the rest of the interview ok but am 100% sure that I haven't got the job

Darby3785 · 09/07/2025 14:56

I had a job interview last month.

I fluffed the interview, all my research and experience didn't come out of my mouth. I was so angry with myself and felt silly after so I can relate to the feeling of being tongue tied and my mind also went blank! I have such a wealth of experience in the area I went for too!!

I didn't get the job and I wasn't surprised

Noshadowsinthedark · 09/07/2025 14:56

@AusMumhere Yes, I had to ask for the question again too….

Thank you though, I feel less alone about it now!

Exactly the same though, I knew the answers and just really kicking myself now.

This happens alot! We can't prepare completely for an interview, there's always going to be questions that we didn't prepare for or expect! Try not to beat yourself up too much about it

Noshadowsinthedark · 09/07/2025 16:21

@shirlem Thank you!

I think it’s just felt harder as they were so bloody lovely. Would have been ace to work with them.

My last interview they had to prompt me on a few answers! I was so embarrassed, it was very simple questions too but the pressure just got to me. I did get the job, so I have everything crossed for you too!

Many years ago I totally fluffed an interview - had the mind blank thing, need to be steered in the right direction by the interview panel. As I turned my phone back on walking across the car park it rang and I was offered a job I'd interviewed for a few days earlier. I accepted straight away fully confident that I had no chance with getting the job I'd just interviewed for.

Imagine my surprise when I was also offered the fluffed interview job a few days later.

YourOnMute · 09/07/2025 16:36

Yes it happened me. I was on maternity leave a d went for an interview. I had what I can only describe as complete forgetfulness, I could not remember a thing. I remember sitting there thinking I know I know this but why can't I remember it?
Hugs to you.

If this is a job that you really want, why not be bold and ask for a do-over? Say you were “not at your best due to a migraine and although it is an unusual request, would it be possible to talk again?” The worst that can happen is that they’d say no. But they they might say yes!

This, absolutely! How long until you find out if you were successful or not?

Titasaducksarse · 09/07/2025 22:43

Yes. Last interview i felt was so terrible I cried after.

Guess what...I got the bloody job. So it might not be as bad as you thought

I am interviewing folk at the moment and I would speak with you again if you asked.

@Noshadowsinthedark I once had a terrible interview, kept losing my thread, going blank. So much so I rang the recruiter straight back after to say I was mortified and it was the worst interview ever and could he tell them I was very keen - and he said they really liked me and it was the way I recovered from it - still embarrassed when I think of it even years later. Got through to
next stage but no further but had decided it wasn’t for me anyway … so you never know!

ByLimeAnt · 09/07/2025 23:04

If it's any help, I've had plenty of people bomb when I've interviewed them. Some people just aren't great at interviewing but are fab employees. I was always happy to prompt our ask a question in a different way.

Bombing is one thing - have zero time for rudeness or directing questions to my male colleague though.

Noshadowsinthedark · 10/07/2025 07:56

Well the recruitment agency called after and she said there would be a second round interview, so I might have a chance at being more competent!

But thanks for the replies.

There’s reassurance there’s still hope!

Congratulations and good luck!

Noshadowsinthedark · 16/07/2025 20:11

Yeah they actually didn’t want a second interview.

Just going to sit in a dark room for a long time now…

So sorry @Noshadowsinthedark!

It’s so tough out there right now, you’re not alone!! Employers know there are a lot of applicants and are being super picky, and changing their minds about what they want.

Good luck going forward and be kind to yourself!!
