(Pics) help me decorate / spruce my home up!

Hello all!
I live in a lovely converted Georgian town house. Just me and DD. It's a rental and I've been here years and plan to be here as long as possible until I can eventually buy. I don't want to invest a lot in this home as it is a rental.. however..

as much as it's lovely, I keep it very tidy and try to live like a minimalist (as much as i can with a 4 year old) I would like to add some colour! The walls look very grey. They aren't grey they are actually stone and the only grey is the carpets. I have lovely high ceilings so the property has tonnes of character and big rooms through out. I just would like to spruce it up a bit! I have about £500 as a budget. Perhaps some runners, rugs, different cushions etc would help?

if anyone can help me style this or have any budget recommendations please let me know. Thank you!

(also the picture of my hallway, I have just hoovered so it has hoover marks on but they look like lines or stains in the pic)

I would definitely fix that large mirror to the wall or move it rather than having it leaning if you have a baby/small child.

It just needs some colour. A large rug, cushions, maybe some plants etc.

Not the point of the thread, sorry, but there's a high chair?
And what's the pink thing in the middle?

The mirror is fixed to the wall completely, DD can't knock it over :)

Yes high chair in that side of the lounge. I have a small dining table and chairs and high chair with a rug underneath for DD so she doesn't drop food on the floor and stain it.

the pink thing is DD, she was playing on the floor so I blocked her out

@Duiprinelloo

also it's a NupNup chair, it goes up to age 3 i believe. But DD is a diddy aged 4 and still loves her chair but it's going soon to someone else as she doesn't need it anyone.

Can you put things in wall or get those not inside hooks and get hanging ,rugs...

Idabelle · 08/07/2025 20:34

The answer to a room that is "missing something " is always C.R.A.P.

Colour, rugs, art, plants

Add those (colour could come from rugs and art if you can't paint) and then reassess what else you need.

reversegear · 08/07/2025 20:37

I would get so many plants in that room a mixture of real and fake, say £200 in pots so you can take them with you and tall ones along that back wall area.

Then I’d choose a colour maybe greens and pinks and buy cushions in stripes, some floral and some plain
and maybe some textures like fluffy cream ones. Wayfair etc or B&Q or Sainsbury’s.

Id also get a few fluffy rugs, maybe stick to a cream and 2 large ones, again Wayfair do great ones.

Anything left over id get a beanbag. The room is so big and a lovely beanbag or two would make a fun seating area to move around.

All of this you can take with you.

ToldMeTheTruth97Percent · 08/07/2025 20:40

@reversegearah beanbags I didn't think of those but that's a really good shout!

I have a bit of a bad experience with plants. I managed to kill a plant that you allegedly cannot kill but I think now adds older she'd enjoy the watering etc. do you have any recommendations for a novice? I think plants would add some lovely green and break up the room a bit

Ha ha it looks like you have a cat hiding in your sink!

That's useful I didn't know that! I think I'm going to scrap the pink rug under the high chair and chuck that in a bedroom and perhaps get 2 large rugs to put in the middle of the lounge to break it up.

high chair is going to another little one next weekend so I'll have even more space to try and fill so I think I'll do that along with the beanbags as PP mentioned.

thanks everyone!

I don’t I’m a plant killer, I have pretty much all fake, ikea ones and Wayfair ones. I have a cheese plant I’ve managed not to kill so that maybe a good start.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 08/07/2025 20:52

Ikea do some fabulous fake plants... all sizes and shapes and plant pots.. ive actually used large waste paper bins to put plants in for the floor.. basket ones look great.
I'd use " jewel" colours for cushions/ rugs/ pictures.. turquoise/ ruby/ pink/ purple...
Buy some frames from ikea and get large pieces of sample wallpaper to put in..
Vinted sell cushions / wall art / curtains etc.

blizymitzy · 08/07/2025 20:59

Put you photo into ChatGPT and ask it to redesign it in whatever style you want and show a picture.
its so simple and incredibly helpful

fireplaceember · 08/07/2025 21:02

I would take the framed prints(?) down in the kitchen, you could hang those in the hallway?

alexalisten · 08/07/2025 21:09

Not helpful in the slightest but I love the kitchen its a lovely house its a really good size and loads of room for dd to play so I wouldn't fill it to much with stuff

rwalker · 08/07/2025 21:14

Needs some massive wall art and curtains

cloudbusting123 · 08/07/2025 22:27

I would get onto Pinterest and chose some colour schemes that you love and start buying art / rugs / furniture that go with the scheme. You need some lovely art on the walls.

I agree to all PP saying I need art on the walls. Is there a way I can put things up on the walls without marking them at all? Want to get a few big pieces on the hallway wall and the back wall of the lounge

Morning @ToldMeTheTruth97Percent you have a really nice house with good size rooms. I don't think the kitchen needs anything, you could hang a nice tea towel and oven gloves from the oven. Other than that it looks easy to keep free from clutter and clean. In the hallway you could put down a long runner rug and a big picture on one of the walls, if you have room a big pot with a plant in it. Dunelm is really good for things like that. For me the sitting room looks off balance everything is up against walls or squashed into the bottom wall. A big rug in the middle of the room, could you move the tv and unit over slightly away from the window and in front of the wall and move the couch out a bit or put it in the middle of the room. Long curtains would be nice. Natural colours would suit every room. Good luck

Yep! You can use command strips, just make sure you buy the ones for the appropriate weight. They are fab for holding up art and don’t leave a mark.
