Claiming on insurance after a big fire - advice please

So I had a big garden and outbuildings fire a few weeks ago, thankfully the house wasn’t affected. But we lost a lot of “stuff” in the outbuildings.

i have like for like and old for new insurance. They sent a disaster company out who cleared the site and took some contents (from the garden office away to see if they could be restored). The shed contents were mainly ash but with some recognisable stuff and the disaster company were supposed to list those as well.

ive had an email from the insurance today of stuff which definitely can’t be restored which I can claim for. But I’m so cross as so much stuff is missing off the list, stuff which was recognisable so should have been listed. So they have put one bike…..but there were two and therefore were two chains and two sets of pedals in the ash which I pointed out to the disaster company. Lots of other stuff like an eglu chicken cube, lawn mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer, bbq which were all melted and mangled but could be seen. Thankfully I did take a video sifting through the ashes before the disaster company came so should have the major it on film. But they have listed stuff I’d never bother cla8ming for like cotton face pads and a plastic cup!

but my main question is what about the stuff of which there was no sign whatsoever, I had a surf board which I guess evaporated in the heat, a body board, gortex cycling jackets, various bike accessories. They’ve told me to add those sort of things to the list. Has anyone been in this situation? Do they pay out for stuff which you can’t prove existed?! I’m beyond worried.

Insurers will pay for items not seen, however you may be asked to evidence ownership with receipts, manuals, photos etc.

I would start making a list and submit this to your insurance company with cost for replacements.

I would also check your policy as there is likely to be a limit for items stored in sheds and outbuildings.

Thanks, sadly for my surfboards I don’t have receipts or even photos. Don’t take photos in the sea.
