6mo biting me constantly while BF

My 6mo DS is the proud owner of two new little razor-sharp teeth that he has started to sink into my nipples and yank his head back while feeding; he has drawn blood a few times. I really don’t want to stop BF him yet, but I can’t take much more of this, it’s bloody agony!

Anyone have any tips on how to stop my little piranha biting me please? I unlatch him every time and say ‘no biting’, doing my best not to physically react to the bite as if I yelp when he bites, he thinks it’s hilarious and clamps down harder as he’s giggling 😫 would a nipple shield help? I’ve never used one as haven’t had any issues with BF until these bloody little teeth came along!

Mine used to do this! I would yelp and put him down immediately. It bloody hurts!

Time to start weaning if it's causing you so much pain. I would. Starting weaning, and bottle feeding when the baby is 6 months old is fine. Smile

Sorry but teeth and a biting habit would make me stop breast-feeding, especially if it's drawing blood!

At six months old he could be weaned and the biting is due to the new experience he has of having teeth. He's trying them out! Is he biting his toys to try out his new teeth too?.

A shield might help reduce biting if you want to though.

You might want to try giving him something to bite on as well at other times such as a teether toy.

One of mine went through this phase 😩 I paid close attention and soon I could usually read when they were about to do it, at which point I unlatched them. Is it usually a several mins in, the point where they are no longer starving so slowing down and their mind has space to wander toward mischief..? I unlatched, waited a min, then carried on if they were still interested.

Its horrible when they do it but if you take him the second he does it then they soon learn.
If that doesn't work try nipple shields or weaning..luckily with both of mine this phase was very short lived!
No pain like it though is there!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 08/07/2025 13:50

Take him off that should say

Both of my babies did this. Fortunately for me they were a little bit older when they got their first teeth. I did exactly what you do and delatched them when they did it. I fed my two until they were 2 years and 6 months and 2 years and 8 months. They stopped fairly quickly because biting does not get the baby any milk.

When he clamps down pull him in very close, he'll let go with his face smooshed against your breast. My biter stopped when I started doing this.
He still bit but not my breast, he drew blood his fathers shoulder when he was carrying him.

Teeth dont belong anywhere near boobs. Now theyve come its time to start weaning. the second teeth arrived on mine - that was it. no more boob. straight onto the bottle. I'm not a teething ring, nor a cow.

DS did this too at around the same age, your chap might be different but mine would do a very small snigger at his own hilarity just before biting, so I would immediately unlatch him at the first hint of a snigger and say firmly ‘no biting’ so that he learned that even thinking about biting was forbidden. Worked very quickly, he only bit me once or twice before I noticed the sinister chuckling before chomping and he never did it again once he realised I had his number.

Believe me, any calf that bites gets a swift kick off mum! Cows wean their young when biting starts.

He’s started weaning and uses his teething toys quite happily, and weirdly doesn’t try to bite his bottles at all (he’s combi-fed), the biting seems to happen when he’s distracted so wanting to look at the dog or out of the window but still keep hold of my nipple at the same time Envy

I’m going to try a shield and persevere, I’ll give him a little grace as his teeth are still a novelty and they’re probably still a bit sore as they only appeared within the last fortnight. If the chomping continues, I’ll probably have to stop BF but I just really didn’t want this to be the way it ended as it’s been such a lovely BF journey Sad

My DS did this as well, oh the pain! But I just watched him carefully and every time he was about to do it I unlatched. Couldn’t get it every time though.. one of the main reasons I stopped BF now at 14 months but it did pass. My ‘ouch’ reaction didn’t help either he just giggled each time. But he did it every time he was teething and it did past until the next ones came through. When he started doing it constantly I just stopped BF immediately and let him BF after. But it’s a phase and will pass.

DD only but once but DS was a nightmare for it.

I took to rubbing anbesol on his gums/teeth before every feed, held his head to stop him gripping and twisting, put him on the floor if he bit and learnt to swear silently.
