Fussy deodorant, red armpits?

I just switched from my normal dove deodorant to a Fussy one as I wanted something more natural and sustainable. I used it once last night and again this morning and so far one armpit has gone quite pink and a little sore and has a bit of a smell and the other is just starting to turn slightly pink as well but doesn't smell and no pain yet.

I've heard people can react in the beginning and you need to stick it out and kind of detox? Is this normal / correct? If I need to stick it out I don't mind but I'm kind of worried about being smellier than normal for a while as I adjust especially at work.

I'd like to hear others experiences! How bad did it get for other people? How'd you manage any reactions like this?

I got a rash from a similar eco friendly deodorant that had sodium bicarbonate in it. I switched to 'we love the planet' sensitive which is great and doesn't irritate my skin.
Maybe fussy do a bicarb free one?

If something irritates your skin, you don't stick it out. Please go and rinse your pits with warm water and gentle soap you aren't sensitive to, and again in the morning. If you have to, buy your old brand on the way to work, providing the irritation has gone down.

No, I don’t think you should have to power through a reaction like that to get used to the product. As pp said, try their sensitive version if they have one, I did that with Wild and have been fine since.

I had similar problems with Wild - I think it's the bicarb that can be a bit irritating. I went back to using my salt of the earth crystal deodorant which works much better for me and doesn't cause any irritation.

Sounds like you're having a reaction to it - I doubt it'll get better with repeated exposure. I use Green People, which is very sensitive, and I don't tolerate a lot of products well.

Fussy do a sensitive / bicarb free one, email them and explain and they may well ‘exchange’ it for the sensitive version

That's a good idea actually, I'm a bit loathe to spend more on products I might not even be able to use especially since I also got a refill before I realised the case was already filled and I know natural deodorants can be a bit hit and miss depending on who you speak to.

So, I actually ended up trying the other refill I had because its a different scent and the redness subsided pretty quickly which is great, must have been something in the other one that didn't agree with my skin!

My next question is, initially its great but by the end of the day it's no longer effective and I reek. Any tips for managing the increased bo initially until my body gets used to it? I've never smelt this bad even if I forgot to wear deodorant so I'm guessing it's the detox stage they talk about.

I had similar issues with Wild. I ignored it, thinking it was my body trying to get used to it, and it literally burnt my skin off. If you’re having a reaction, listen to your body. I learnt that the hard way.

2chocolateoranges · 08/07/2025 10:17

Ive started using fussy, I’m about 8 weeks in. For the first 4 weeks I could smell a bit of a strange smell in the evening( no one else could because I asked my friends) but it does subside and all ok now.

I would mention to them about the reaction to your skin after 1 or 2 days they might replace it for a sensitive one.

Honeypizza · 08/07/2025 10:43

I switched to Fussy's sensitive version after having the same issue and it's been absolutely fine. For that initial stage I would give myself a quick wash in the loos if needed and then reapply, or apply some anti-bac gel to quickly get rid of any smells. That said, that stage shouldn't last too long. I tried a different natural deodorant a few years ago and after a few months of struggling I gave up. I've been fine with Fussy thankfully.

Barch1 · 25/07/2025 13:08

I have been using Fussy for 3 years now and find it by far the best. I subscribe but obviously you can get it in Tesco now. The whole family uses it

Lavender14 · 25/07/2025 17:13

So I reached out to them and they were great in terms of customer service, took a few details and then sent me a free refill of one of their sensitive deodorants which I've been using now for a couple of weeks with no issues and all the irritation has gone so it must have just been the bicarb in it that was causing the issue. I had about 4 days of real stink but now its totally fine and actually probably smells nicer by the end of the day than my old deodorant did! And a weird positive is that my pits are also now super soft and moisturised! So a happy ending to the angry armpits!

I started using fussy about 7 weeks ago . No problems swapping over as was using Sanex 0% anyway . It’s been great I have a physical job and it’s been heat waves . Sometimes a little sticky but no smell . Find the lid very hard to get off , but now last few days I have one pit is red and slightly sore?
