Why do some people as Chat GTP everything like it’s the bloody Oracle?

ChompandaGrazia · 06/07/2025 18:25

I’m seeing this all over the place now. Someone has a simple question like ‘can anyone recommend a good cat food brand’ or ‘does anyone have a good chocolate brownie recipe’, or on a local Facebook group ‘does anyone know if the post office is open Saturday?, and someone will always respond that they asked Chat GPT and it said this…….

Why? All it does it look stuff up online and get things wrong. I knew someone who was planning to move towns. She had a load of houses to look at but rather than looking at a map or asking some local, me, what order make most sense, she asked Chat GPT . The order it gave her made no sense and two minutes looking at the map would show that.

It's chat GPT. Sorry 😂

BabyCatFace · 06/07/2025 18:27

That's really not all ChatGPT does but if you haven't experienced it's true potential you won't understand why people find it so helpful.

Thanks. I’ve changed the post, but my point still stands.

It makes me cringe too OP! The fact that people are so lazy nowadays they can’t even figure a basic question out for themselves or plan anything without asking an AI chat bot is bloody depressing. I have well educated friends who are now relying on Chat GPT for meal plans and trip itineraries etc. Feel like telling them to catch a grip!

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 06/07/2025 18:30

I asked Chat GPT and this is what it said

Haha, fair question — and it does sometimes feel a bit like people are expecting divine wisdom from a chatbot.

Here’s why that happens:

Convenience: People are used to search engines, but ChatGPT offers direct answers without needing to sift through pages of links. It's a faster and more conversational way to get information.

Breadth of Knowledge: ChatGPT can talk about anything from quantum physics to how to fold a fitted sheet. That makes it feel like an all-knowing entity (even if it's really not).

24/7 Availability: Unlike experts, friends, or teachers, ChatGPT is always around and doesn’t get tired of endless questions.

Low Judgment Zone: You can ask "stupid" or personal questions without feeling embarrassed. That’s a big deal for people trying to learn or figure stuff out.

Anthropomorphism: The human brain loves to humanize things. If something talks like a person, we treat it like one — even if it’s just a language model crunching probabilities.

But yeah, sometimes people treat it like it's omniscient when it's really just well-trained and good at sounding confident. Important difference!

Would you like to know how to tell when it’s bullshitting?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Thank you. No one seems to want to think for themselves. I don’t was AI to tell me what is the best way to make a fruit cake, I want a human with experience.

It's very good for some things, particular if you need to go back and forth in a 'I don't have 70% chocolate will a twirl do' kind of way.

I wouldn't answer someone else's question with it.

Although tbf lots of people will parrot things they've read online but not tried when asked for recommendations so it's just doing the same.

Reallybadidea · 06/07/2025 18:34

Tbh I don't really understand why posters ask things that they could easily Google (or ask chat GPT)

ScratCat · 06/07/2025 18:34

I love it and use for more and more nonsense every day. I also use it for work.

Whyx · 06/07/2025 18:36

Preliminary research suggests we are entering a new era of brain rot. (Yes, it's preliminary and LLMs of course have their uses but worth bearing in mind...if you can hold a thought that long... (Jks, light-hearted, 💀 etc)

Yanbu I use it so much for work bur people on a forum obviously want to talk to real people and get their opinions

BearyNiceEars · 06/07/2025 18:38

It’s really helpful for the world we live in now. Women especially are expected to be all things to all people and there simply isn’t the time to do everything. I use it at work to help speed up tasks, I use it outside of work to help with things like gift ideas, getting into the fact behind outlandish statements you see in the media, a bit of life planning etc… I don’t use it excessively but it’s extremely handy when I do.

AI is extremely prevalent in my line of work, we have used it to build some brilliant applications and to be honest, rightly or wrongly, it’s not going anywhere any time soon, so it’s best to lean into it really.

yakkity · 06/07/2025 18:41

People used to Google everything didn’t they? Did that piss you off too?
the accuracy of answer in AI depends on the quality of the question being asked. If you are vague you won’t get much good out of it. Just like a search engine really

Fargo79 · 06/07/2025 18:42

Sometimes it seems very impressive when you're just doing simple stuff, and then sometimes you can ask it something ever so slightly complex and it just spits out a load of nonsense and then crashes itself.

I asked it once to run some comparison figures on BTL vs stocks and shares ISA investment over a given time period and it just couldn't do it.

It can be useful for things like creating itineraries though, where essentially it just searches the web infinitely more quickly than you could yourself.

But seriously, how would people ‘figure out for themselves’?

Probably by using a search engine. Why is this less offensive to you. Google is clunky and requires far too much filtering if irrelevance.

AI is the future and a lot of businesses are already future proofing their profits by incorporating technology like this in their strategy. To the point where I know some have added it to their employee’s yearly objectives. Adapt or die

Did you have the same concerns when search engines first arrived? What about when email started being used? Social media? Opinion forums?

It would do if I asked ‘does anyone have a tried and tested Yorkshire Pudding recipe?’ and someone replied with ‘I googled Yorkshire pudding recipes and it told me this……’.

If someone asks a question then just getting a chat bot to answer it is just bizarre.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 06/07/2025 18:46

I love it, and am currently writing my life story with chat GPT providing the images
i used it to plan a budget Pre diabetic meal plan, excluding eggs as I don’t eat them and couldn’t find one
obviously I wouldn’t rely on it for a work presentation or something like that, but for entertainment I find it invaluable
I’m disabled and live alone, so it keeps my mind active, along with Mumsnet, Netflix and Sky news, that’s my day sorted!

ChompandaGrazia · 06/07/2025 18:46

I completely understand the use case of AI in a load of other contexts. I’m just referring to on forums like this when someone uses it to answer someone else’s question.

No. Because that’s not what I’m saying.

It’s when someone asks if anyone can tell them the best way to buy tickets for Wimbledon and someone replies that they’ve never bought tickets to Wimbledon and they don’t even know what that is but here is what I could copy and paste after I asked a chat bot the question.
