Where to get child prescription sunglasses/glasses tinted??

Serenitesummer · 05/07/2025 22:58

We’re going abroad and my 12 yr old child wears glasses.
Any ideas of what to do for sunglasses.
If they’re normal sunglasses they won’t be able to see and I’d prefer not to buy prescription sunglasses just for a holiday. Lenses not an option.
i have an extra pair of NHS glasses- has anyone ever got normal glasses tinted to be sunglasses?
Was it a success and where could I get this done quickly?

My daughter had to buy her child prescription sunglasses as they wouldn’t give them free, but child wears them every day now when it’s sunny

CookiesAreForSharing · 05/07/2025 23:04

My son age 14 loves the clip on sunglasses which pop on regular glasses.

Thanks - this might be an option.

I’ll google to search for them but are there clip on ones you’d recommend?
Anyone had glasses tinted after they were made?

You'd have to pay for new lenses to be put into the frames. The price may have gone up but last I checked it was £49 for new lenses, but you have to pay extra for the tinting. By the time you've paid for all of that you may as well buy the sunglasses. I have a pair they're great.

CookiesAreForSharing · 06/07/2025 01:52

The ones we bought were on Amazon - the clip ons. Lots to choose from!

55lookalive · 06/07/2025 03:54

@Serenitesummer I used to work at Specsavers and we occasionally tinted old lenses. We'd make no guarantees (tint might not take, get very dark, danger of breakage etc) but you could ask.

Needspaceforlego · 06/07/2025 05:01

Look on Amazon fit over sunglasses. I bought a part relatively cheap £15 look like normal sunglasses but you wear them over normal glasses.

My other answer is contact lenses and normal sunglasses but thats not a cheap option.

Ive also seen magnetic clipons that work with normal frames but never actually found them in an shop or opticians

Surely they already have sunglasses for when its sunny, or is their norm not being able to see properly unless its dull?

Childrens glasses have to be fitted in person in the UK, to ensure they are wearing correctly prescribed glasses to protect their vision.

Yes, but not as sunglasses, I am dyslexic and needed blue lenses.

Another vote for the clip ons, but get more than one, they get lost easily. If you get separate glasses then the child needs to have both on them if you go into a bar or a shop otherwise they will be blind.

I have photochromatic lenses, they cost but at least I don't have the glasses needing to be changed.

Less than £25 from here www.eyewearuk.com/prescription-sunglasses/kids-prescription-sunglasses

This is a strange response - are you insinuating that I’m neglecting my child by not having sunglasses 😂 they’re not needed often where we live and I’ll leave responding that

Thanks for this website, I’ll look into seeing how fast I could get them.
The clip on ones sound good - otherwise we’ll be carrying round normal glasses too like someone said!
I’ll look into them - not sure how they fit, you’d think you need ones to fit the glasses

Our optician tints glasses for about. Could be an option if you have a spare pair at the right prescription.

Or fit-overs. All the cool kids at work wear them.

No, I just find it weird they don’t already have a pair, surely everyone has sunglasses!

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 06/07/2025 12:45

As a glasses wearer I would suggest just get them a pair of prescription sunglasses. I live in NW England but still get a lot of wear out them at home, it’s much nicer to wear a pair of sunglasses I can see out of! It is a hassle changing to and from the regular glasses when I go inside but worth it. Also consider tinted prescription swimming goggles if they spend a lot of time in the pool on holiday. You can get these really cheaply online and they make a huge difference! Wish I’d had some years ago.

elizabethcharlotte · 06/07/2025 12:48

I got my daughter a pair of prescription sunglasses from specsavers. We got them a couple of years ago when she needed new prescription glasses and did it through their buy one get one free offer. We still paid towards them due to thining the lenses but it saved lots of money. I don't know if they still do that offer.

Pashazade · 06/07/2025 18:44

When you next get their glasses renewed go for transition lenses, problem solved! Clip-ons should solve it in the interim.

OpticLife · 06/07/2025 18:48

have you tried at your opticians? As long as the prescription is in date then a prescription pair of sunglasses can be dispensed. It would be private - no NHS voucher to help towards cost.

Skypod · 06/07/2025 18:51

Simplest option would be to take an old pair of specs to your optometrist and ask them to tint them using a 'dye bath'. Or you could have a go yourself
Shades Liquid Tints - Bondeye Optical

OpticLife · 06/07/2025 19:33

Bondeye only sell to registered opticians

It can be very hard to tint a lens which has already been glazed into a frame, such as if the lens is coated - and the vast majority of lenses are in one form or another. Any scratches on the lenses can also affect it. Which is why it isn’t really done at all.

on top of this, there is a lot of regulation concerning the sale & supply of spectacles to under 16s. So if the frame was a poor fit/prescription had changed it really won’t happen.

under 16s need to see a registered qualified optician (optometrist or dispensing optician) to ensure the fitting and measurements taken are accurate.

BestZebbie · 06/07/2025 23:05

Specsavers generally have buy one get one free offers where you can buy your real glasses from them and then get an identical pair with either tinted or clear lenses for free.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/07/2025 23:25

Clip on are available in most big Boots stores, I used to have some that just slid down over the top of the frame.

Now I have transitions lenses which are much more convenient.

another option is Glasses Direct, just go to the websites pick a basic pair of frame and the lenses are usually free, so you could get some prescription sunglasses for about £20/30

Do you live indoors? We all wear sunglasses most of the time when outdoors in our family!
