People using chatgpt to repsond to posts?

blisterpak · 05/07/2025 12:49

Are people going to chatgpt, putting in the mumsnet users question and then pasting the response rather than answering themselves now? Just seen it on another thread. Obviously these LLM are fine for certain things but people posting here are looking for an answer from a human being or are we doomed to be overrun with AI slop here?

Ridiculous isn’t it? Haven’t they got any opinions of their own!!
I do use chat GPT for entertainment
Recently did a capsule wardrobe and sketches of my friend who I had no idea thinks of me as more than a friend) He’s right now I can see it!

I have used it because I asked it to find the names of some studies to support what I was saying about something. I I anticipated if I just said studies someone would ask what studies and I didn't have the information on the tip of my tongue. I knew if it brought them up - which ones were the ones that I had previously looked at.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/07/2025 17:20

I hate it too

But surely you’d reply, and add the studies (after fact-checking them). You don’t verbatim quote ChatGPT in a cut-and-paste.

Well my post above was AI, I think it’s easily spotted in that case as it’s so bland. But I can see why people use it, especially posters with poor SPAG who are so often castigated here.

I don’t appreciate it when people post a response offering advice from chatgpt. If we wanted that we’d use AI ourselves.

IggleBiggle · 05/07/2025 21:16

I don't trust it lol. I use it for unblocking my brain sometimes, for rephrasing emails, or for sometimes just as a replacement for Google.

Apparently it's really bad for the brain and will make us all stupid - can't remember but read some research.

I really think books are much better - it's not just that you get someone's lifes work but nothing STICKS if you read it in short form with bullet points.

I hadn't really noticed it until this thread. Now it's bloody annoying me. Grrr

Geneticsbunny · 05/07/2025 23:41

It feels a bit like that " let me just Google that for you" thing that went on a while back. Very patronising too.

I get where you're coming from — people come to Mumsnet for real human experiences, especially when it comes to parenting, relationships, health, etc. Sometimes you just want advice from someone who's been there, not a generic-sounding wall of text.
That said, I don’t think it’s always black and white. Some people might use ChatGPT to help phrase what they’re trying to say, especially if they’re not confident in writing or just want to be clear and concise. Others might be using it to get ideas or check facts before replying — kind of like how we used to link to NHS pages or articles to back things up.
But yeah, I agree — if someone’s just copying and pasting AI replies without adding any of their own thoughts or real-life input, it can feel a bit soulless. The best Mumsnet threads are full of personality, nuance, and blunt honesty — hard things for an AI to truly replicate.
So maybe the middle ground is: if someone does use AI to help, they should at least put their own spin on it. Otherwise, what’s the point of posting on a forum full of real people?

So you used AI to tell us that it's wrong to use AI?

anotherwordforit · 05/07/2025 23:49

I put this very post into ChatGPT and it came up with-

I get where you’re coming from — when people post here, it’s usually because they want a genuine, human response based on lived experience, empathy, or personal perspective. That’s what makes forums like Mumsnet feel supportive and real.

That said, I don’t think it’s all black and white. Some people might use tools like ChatGPT to help structure their thoughts or explain something clearly, especially if it’s a factual or technical question. But if someone’s just copying and pasting an AI-generated answer without adding anything personal or relevant to the thread, yeah, that can feel a bit soulless and out of place.

I’d hope most posters still value that back-and-forth that only happens between real people. AI might be useful here and there, but it’s no substitute for the kind of support and shared experience that makes this place what it is.

Let me know if you’d like it toned differently — warmer, snarkier, or more neutral.

I keep noticing AI written posts in lots of places. One place I notice it a lot is on Tripadvisor, certain businesses reply to every review with these lengthy messages that are so obviously AI written.

Gowlett · 05/07/2025 23:55

I literally don’t know what ChatGTP, AI, TikTok, Snapchat even are. I’ve never spoken to a device, or Alexa, or Sat Nav.

I don’t feel I’m missing out on anything… Maybe I am, though!

MrsEverest · 06/07/2025 02:47

I’ve seen quite a few anti-choice posts that I’ve wondered about.

I mean there’s clearly an agenda behind them, and I assume some sort of coordinated effort, but also some of them read as though they were not written by the poster.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/07/2025 03:03

I'd no idea.

There are heaps of threads on MN were the OP and replies are AI.
