Car insurance due for renewal, should I add my learner driver son (provisional licence) as named driver?

I'm guessing it will increase my premium from 400 up to 600 or 700 but I am paying £50 a month to Veygo at the moment for insurance and it will probably be 4/5 months before he does his test.

I'm guessing that if I add him when he passes his test that they will charge an admin fee of £50+ just for changing the policy and I suspect they will also increase the premium then.

Any thoughts?

Yes, it's relatively cheap to put a learner on a car policy.

And yes, when they pass, the premium will rocket, as they're a much higher "risk" when they've passed and driving on their own than when they were learning and under your instruction/control.

When we put our son on our policy, the increase was around £200 or so, but when he passed it increased by around £1000!

oh wow, I naively thought that if I added them now that would be it for the year but obviously I will have to tell them when he passes and they will hike the cost.
Who are you with @taxguru ?
Just wondering if there are some companies who will hike it less than others?

I've got my DD on my insurance as a learner and it's not too expensive - she has her test soon though, didn't realise it would rocket if/when she passes!

I do recommend adding a learner, though - it's been great for DD to get loads of practice between lessons.

i just spoke to AXA, my current insurance company and they won't take drivers under 21, even if they have passed their test!
So I need to shop around and find a company that will insure an under 21.
i could stick with AXA and cancel the policy when he passes his test but that will have a £52 admin fee.
I guess that if I do that at least I can shop around and find the best available price.

Doesn’t matter if they’re the named driver or not- an under 21 will make your premium sky rocket & they always need a black box. Insurance companies got wise to “fronting” years ago. Having an older experienced driver on the policy can bring it down slightly but the minute you add a teen in any capacity it will cost.
