Does anyone else eat fish and poultry but not bigger animals?

So in my youth I was vegetarian for a good few years, that was a long time ago. I've never felt comfortable with eating meat but struggled to be veggie long term.

For about 8 years I haven't eaten pork. I just don't like it, the taste or the thought of eating a pig. I've never eaten lamb or goat.

I did eat beef (though not mince because again, just don't like it, use quorn substitute)

But lately I've been in contact with baby and adult cows and I just can't eat beef anymore.

So I don't eat pork, lamb or goat and want to give up beef.

I just don't feel as strongly about fish and chickens (I don't like turkey or duck, I only eat chicken)

Does anyone else feel like this?

I could never give up beef ever! It’s the nicest meat I find. There are two names for it pollo-pescatarian and flexitarian so I don’t think your alone

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 04/07/2025 19:11

You are not alone. Didn’t know there was a name for it! Thank you @Coconutter24

I am vegetarian and have been all my adult life so far but I just wanted to say that on a "feelings" level, I definitely "feel" more about mammals than fish or birds, so I do get you there to an extent. My vegetarian DH feels exactly the same too. I know a few pescetarians but I don't think anyone who also eats chicken. I wouldn't think anything of meeting someone who did though, I mean I wouldn't care anyway.

Aren't pigs and lambs smaller than tuna?

Nchangeo · 04/07/2025 19:21

nonmammalarian?
smalletarian?

Nchangeo · 04/07/2025 19:21

Tinytarian

Mochaccino99 · 04/07/2025 19:22

I'm the opposite - I think if I have a bit of beef it's a small part of a large animal that's had a (relatively) long life and fed lots of people. One chicken or one fish though and that's an entire life you've taken, just for you.

TimeFliesin2046 · 04/07/2025 19:22

I cannot see the logic behind this. Poultry are amongst the most mistreated animals in the food industry.

Flossflower · 04/07/2025 19:25

OP, I am the same as you. I do not eat mammals.

failedatlifee · 04/07/2025 19:29

I only eat chicken (no fish or other animals)

SlightlyTooMuch · 04/07/2025 19:33

No. If you think earring meat is unethical, then it’s unethical to eat any animals, regardless of which animals you ‘feel strongly about’ or ‘don’t like the thought of eating.’

Its not about mistreatment I dont think or size. Pigs, goats, cows, sheep they all hop around like dogs. They seem to have similar personalities to dogs to me.

Today the baby cows were rubbing their heads up against me and looking at me when I talked to them.

Fish and birds just don't seem as sentient.

I don't think its unethical.

I just don't like the taste of a lot of meat and personally feel bad eating animals that seem quite aware. But i do believe humans are supposed to eat meat and theres nothing morally wrong with it (within welfare requirements)

I just don't feel anywhere near as bad eating a tuna as a pig

Birds can definitely show affection and many of them are very intelligent. I once nursed a crow back to life and it visited me and brought me gifts regularly for ages.

I’m vegan, and personally, I think its a bit hypocritical to pick and choose, but ultimately it’s up to you what and why you want to eat what you do.

I don't mind being seen as hypocritical. Nothing in this world is black and white.

Well, if it’s all about your completely illogical ‘feelings’, you do you, obviously.

MorningLarkEchoes · 04/07/2025 19:40

I don’t know why but I do find the idea of eating bigger animals more upsetting. I saw a documentary about animal slaughter once. I remember how traumatic it was with cows because of the sound of them falling to the floor and the sight of these massive beasts collapsing.Horrible 😔

I do eat meat but I sometimes have a pang of guilt when I see a cute baby lamb or chick and think about how cruel and brutal the slaughtering process is. Having had a vegetarian guest stay for a week recently I actually enjoyed some of the quorn type meat substitute things I bought so I'm going to try to go for more plant based foods and less animal based.

A friend of mine feels bad about chickens but thinks cows are too big to live 🐮

TheLurpackYears · 04/07/2025 19:42

You know tuna are bigger than sheep (after they've been sheared) don't you?

tonyhawks23 · 04/07/2025 19:43

OP have you met chickens and got to know them because honestly I think maybe you haven't if you think they dont have personalities, they are actually incredible.watching them free is brilliant, they are such personalities!they love, love to sunbathe, relaxing flat out in the sun, they love to dust bath, they love to explore.if you are sitting outside just working on your laptop they are so social they just come and hang out with you.they protect each other from predators,if one is sick they will stay close by and support their friend.they get excited, they get scared, they enjoy life.i honestly think you should rethink your policy- you say you can't eat some animals because you know them so I think you should get to know some chickens they are wonderful!

Do you eat dairy products OP?

cupfinalchaos · 04/07/2025 19:53

I eat fish but no poultry or meat. I would happily be vegetarian were it not for the fact I’m lazy and fish is an easy protein, and also the fact that we travel a lot and the vegetarian options are usually crap. Im a hypocrite because if I had to kill the fish myself I wouldn’t eat it. I make chicken for my kids and when I’m prepping it I don’t even see it as food.. it’s a bird.

hexsnidgett · 04/07/2025 19:54

I'm of the opinion, people can draw the line wherever they like as long as they don't say they are vegetarian and then go and eat meat and fish.
It is incredibly tiresome to be asked if I am the kind of vegetarian that eats fish.Hmm
