I knew shop lifting was a problem but I didn't imagine it was like this..

DS is working in a Tesco Express. He personally makes around 8 shop lifting reports every day. Obviously these are just the one he sees.

I imagined that shoplifting was kids/teens stealing a chocolate bar or desperate people stealing food and that does happen, but most of it is much larger scale. Yesterday he had people arrive with rucksacks and literally sweep the contents of a shelf into their bags.

Staff are taught not to confront them (good as far as his mother is concerned!) and police take no action even when there is good CCTV.

This is a small supermarket in the nicer bit of a perfectly pleasant suburban town.

I saw a worker in Tesco stock a fridge full of steak. He went into the back to get other things and in the meantime an obvious drug addict came in and completely cleared it all into her tote bag and just walked out. I say her outside through the window showing her dealer what she had to trade. The worker came back and looked completely confused … I pointed at her and told him she’d taken it all. He screamed at me ‘why didn’t you stop her????’ 😂

Frustrating for him, but it was not your problem. And other than shouting, you can't do much else anyway.

My town has a lot of addicts in the centre who treat all the cafes and shops like a personal pantry. One of them went into Costa and helped herself, and a regular stopped her. He put his arm out, and she went crying to the police about assault. He got in trouble for it.... she didn't for her shoplifting. It is fucking weird.

It's all gone crazy, "human rights" need to be done away with, drug addicts and criminals don't deserve them.

It truly is. She didn’t look like a woman who was going to be stopped. She obviously needed her fix and I wasn’t prepared to potentially get stabbed for Tescos! I just found it funny that he thought I ought to have intervened 😂

I agree but it won’t happen under Starmer as most of his legal career was defending human rights!

"human rights" lawyers are the lowest of the low.

how do you know this?

and as for ‘hard labour’…what exactly does that look like in mumsnet world?

we have to make some assumptions here that less than 12 months sentences are petty crimes.
Shoplifting included in that.

Reoffending rates are higher for prisoners serving sentences of less than 12 months compared to the overall average. Specifically, over 56% of offenders serving sentences under 12 months will re-offend, according to official UK statistics. This contrasts with the overall reoffending rate of around 26.5% in the UK.

I'm gobsmacked reading this thread. I'm beginning to think honest people are being persecuted. We pay our taxes and this is how we're treated.

Southern25 · 30/07/2025 20:37

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the smaller convenience stores close if shoplifting was out of control because the insurance / losses would be too great.

Next time you see a shoplifter, blame them when these stores start shutting down or there will be a different shopping model. I think there will be a time when everything will almost be online - this would eradicate theft in physical shops.

And yet we have a PM who was one!

Our courts convict innocent people every week. You strip away the human rights of the accused and many more innocent people will be convicted. Is that really what you want?

Many of the stories you read in the press about cases involving human rights are simply wrong. You may, for example, get the impression that an illegal immigrant can earn the right to stay in the country simply by buying a pet cat due to the thoroughly incorrect reports that appeared in the press about one particular immigration case.

In our local co op they only put 2 packs of each meat out at a time due to this. Alcohol is behind the till it’s crazy

PassingStranger · 01/08/2025 15:21

Yesterday someone was knocked down, by a shoplifter running away from a shop.
It's disgusting. Get your lives in order. Things aren't free, snd if they were in business would they like thieving done to them?
No thought not.

OonaStubbs · 03/08/2025 12:50

32 months is not nearly long enough when she stole £120,000.

Until you or a family member needs one. Maybe take away women's rights as a precursor? Obv 50% of adults may object but the other 50% may think that's good. Put them back in the kitchen.

DD works in Tescos. Their uniform tops now all have the wee plastic holder for a body cam

Boots reckon she stole £299,000 worth.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 10/08/2025 02:44

That's truly disgusting. That's not even punishment. I also am not a fan of prisoners being able to have their children with them. That's hardly any punishment at all, more like a group home. A lucrative crime with little punishment and the courts wonder why it keeps happening, until every business closes or only lets in one customer at a time, via reservation (which would be fine by me).

Southern25 · 18/08/2025 20:56

There are mothers in prisons with mother and baby units - it’s basically like an ensuite room. They have baby groups and play areas. They have 24 hour staff on hand, prison staff trained specially trained to deal with mothers and babies. , and access to health care at all times.

It really is better than people get in the community and hardly a punishment. Obviously this is all paid for by the tax payer too. They’ll also get help with housing on release.
