What happened to petticoats?

I saw something on another thread that made me wonder what happened to petticoats? I'm sure you can still get them but I'm also sure most women don't bother with them!
My Mum always wore one when I was a kid back in the 70s / 80s, but I wouldn't even consider wearing one now.
So why not? What's changed that means women don't need them any more?
Thanks!

I take the lining out of dresses and wear a slip because I can't stand polyester. So many lovely things ruined by polyester lining.

I remember them in the 70s/80s. To stop skirts being see through like Diana's

When I was 10 in 1985 girls had a term of sewing while boys did something else. We had to make petticoats which were cotton and had lace attached I think. I can’t remember when I stopped wearing petticoats (and also can’t remember ever wearing the one I made!)

PashaMinaMio · 04/07/2025 09:07

I have a drawer full of petticoats, mostly M&S, and pretty camisoles.

I always wear a petticoat, full or half slip under unlined dresses or skirts.
It makes the outer garment hang better because it helps smooth out the lumps and bumps many of us have. 🙄 There’s also a modesty element to it if a dress is a bit see-through.

Younger women dont seem to understand that principle.

I rinse them in a bit of fabric conditioner which is the fool proof method to stop static cling.

Can anyone remember the 80s fashion of having lace attached the bottom of skirts so it looked like a petticoat? I loved that look. Very long skirts with the Lacey trim. I think I will buy a petticoat/slip as lots of clothes are clingy or see through.

BunnyLake · 04/07/2025 09:11

My mum always wore the half slip petticoats when I was a kid. That reminds me that she wore girdles as well (even though she was slim). I think I may have sometimes worn them back in the 80s, (I’ve never worn a girdle though).

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 04/07/2025 09:12

I wear them all the time. I don’t want to wear a skirt and it be see through in the sun.

I was about to post that picture.

I had those! I was a dedicated follower of fashion back in the 80s 😁

I love a slip thread. Many shops sell them, it’s strange that people claim never to have seen or heard of them.
They help clothes hang better and can add an extra layer of warmth, as others have said.

Yes! Loved it. It was very Laura Ashley.

Are the full slips comfortable? Or are the half slips more practical does anyone know. Thanks.

I think - particularly among the younger generation- no one cares if clothes are see through anymore. It’s just not a thing. Just like my dds age group (dd is 22) don’t wear proper bras anymore, even those who have similar sized boobs to me (36G). They’re happy for them to bounce about all over the place and show nipples through clothes. Same with knickers showing through trousers / skirts etc. My Mum would be turning in her grave! 😂

Edited

It’s because they are young. I didn’t wear a petticoat when I was young. Once you get to an age where there are lumps and bumps and cellulite and your tits are droopy you start to try and tidy the area up or disguise it somewhat.

amooseymoomum · 04/07/2025 09:21

i guess went the same way as stockings etc. i must admit i always felt quite feminine in one and as they say layers are warmer than one piece of clothing. its the price that puts me off these days

neverhappenedtopablopicasso · 04/07/2025 09:24

I'm 44 and the only time I've ever worn a slip is when I bought a handmade 1940s vintage dress and when you wore it it just didn't quite hang right and then I realised it was clearly designed to go over a slip, so I bought a 1940s slip specifically to go with that. Never seen anyone my age wearing one apart from hardcore vintage clothes people who literally dress 1950s all the time, I don't think. My mum would have thought they were extremely old fashioned and never had any either.

Christwosheds · 04/07/2025 09:26

I have lots of them. I wear them if a dress is too sheer and I wear them in colder weather as an extra layer. Silk is nicest but hard to find and very expensive so I’ve just bought a pattern to make a few fitted silk slips for dd, who is 20. I think they look beautiful, when you are in your slip getting ready to go out. Think Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

I think they're still needed sometimes. I wore one today. There are lots in M&S

Me and teen DD were in M and S the other day and she asked what they were!
Growing up my mum always wore one and I did in the 80s!

Octavia64 · 04/07/2025 09:38

Last time I was in London I saw people wearing mesh dresses.

if you are happy to wear one if those I don’t think you need a slip.

also I don’t know about anyone else but I wore very short dresses and skirts in the 90s and you would not have got a slip under them!

I wear full slips far more often, but a half slip with a skirt that needs one, if I don’t want an extra layer under whatever I have on my top half.
My Mum had lovely white cotton 50s strapless petticoats, with a boned bodice and an A line skirt . To wear under strappy evening dresses or Summer dresses, no need for a bra.

oustedbymymate · 04/07/2025 09:41

I still wear a 'slip' under dresses when needed. I'm 35. My friends really laugh but I don't care

sesquipedalian · 04/07/2025 09:46

I almost always wear a slip, as does one of my daughters - my sister always accuses us of being the last two in England to do so: I point out that M and S wouldn’t be selling them if people weren’t buying them. To those who say they are clingy, may I recommend these from m and s - (cool comfort flexifit, £20 - I can’t seem to post a link from the app).

Blobbitymacblob · 04/07/2025 09:47

I made two cotton slips for under my summer maxi dresses as I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t a slippery synthetic and the maxi dresses have an annoying seam across my thighs. Hadn’t thought of them as petticoats though 😂

I hate full slips in summer, for some reason they make me overheat, while a half one has no effect.

marmiteloversunite · 05/07/2025 04:33

M&S do a culotte/slip that I wear under dresses. Works like a petticoat but stops chub rub too.

I loved my long lace petticoat in the 80’s!

Gosh the 24 hour girdle! I’d forgotten all about them 😀
