What is the first celebrity death you remember?

My daughter has been asking lots of questions about today’s tragic news (a boy at school told her about it) and it made me think this is probably the first celebrity death she has taken note of and will probably be the first one she remembered. The first celebrity death I remember is Princess Diana. I was about the same age DD is now.

Freddie Mercury. I cried before school.

Freddy Mercury

This is probably mine as well.

Princess Diana

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 03/07/2025 18:46

JFK, though I was only five at the time. I can still remember my dad, a blunt Yorkshireman, saying “ bloody ‘ell, they’ve shot the bugger!”.

FrostyGlitter · 03/07/2025 18:47

Elvis, I was at primary school and my best friend was obsessed by him. She cried for days.

MrsSethGecko · 03/07/2025 18:50

Another for Elvis- my mum woke me up for school and was upset- I was a bit eh? I knew who he was of course but wasn't a fan- neither was my mum but it still had her crying 😢

MsFelicityLemon · 03/07/2025 18:51

I was going to say River Phoenix, but Birdsinginginthetrees's post made me realise it's actually Freddy Mercury.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/07/2025 18:53

Tommy Cooper.

Yes I remember watching that performance live on TV, and the audience laughing because they thought it was part of the act.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 03/07/2025 18:55

Elvis although I didn't know who he was.

Wolmando · 03/07/2025 18:55

When Elvis died it was like when Diana died, all over the telly and headlines and supplements in the papers, a huge outpouring of grief

Usernamenotavailable19 · 03/07/2025 18:56

The queen mother I think, we watched her funeral in primary school

Usernamenotavailable19 · 03/07/2025 18:57

I know she’s not a celebrity it’s just the very first well known person I remember who died when I was young

OfAllThePlaces · 03/07/2025 18:57

I am a bit young for TC (30) but I watched his death and as bad as it sounds it was so funny. I think he would’ve liked to think he went out making people laugh. My mum was a big fan

StrongandNorthern · 03/07/2025 18:57

JFK.

RattyMcBatty · 03/07/2025 18:57

Elvis also. My dad was very upset.

TimeFliesin2046 · 03/07/2025 18:58

Probably Princess Diana when I was 10. I mainly remember it because the teachers made us write mawkish poetry about it when we went back to school a few days later. I still cringe.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/07/2025 18:58

Mine was Princess Diana too
