Passport Q - has anyone in Scotland changed their child’s forename on Birth Certificate?

Urgh, having such issues with the bloody passport office just now. DC changed their name a while ago and rather than do a deed poll I changed it on the birth certificate. Now the passport office want a deed poll showing the name change; I cannot do this as legally the name has changed already, so cannot change from old name to new name on a deed poll as this would be lying about the name now. Also obviously dates would not match up and this could cause future complications.

has anyone changed their child’s first name on a BC and successfully managed to get them a new passport? The old passport was expired but I still sent it back as evidence of old name which obviously matches ‘previous name’ or whatever the wording is on new BC

I don’t really know what to do, I have called them but the phone people just take information and pass it on they don’t actually answer any questions.

How did you manage to change the birth certificate? Was it within a certain time after birth?

LevelUpDown · 03/07/2025 18:32

My name was changed in my 20s on the birth certificate (Scotland) . I learnt a good few years later it doesn’t mean shit to ANYONE . My new name is on my birth certificate, my old name is on the bottom as “previously”. Not one organisation has accepted it.

You have to do a deed poll. This is so easy to do online. You don’t even need to pay, but I did pay about £18 to get decent copies and covering letters. You just get two people to sign them and it’s done. Its the only way to get past this so don’t worry about it

keep these documents as safe as the birth certificate. HMRC, DVLA, passport office will take the deed poll and don’t care for the amended birth certificate

I thought this too but the OP said the child changed their name which makes it sound like the child must be older?

I didn't think it was possible to just change a birth certificate because it's a historical document?

dementedpixie · 03/07/2025 18:44

But i think the OP would have to do a deed poll to the passport name and then another to the name on the birth certificate.

@passprob Did you get a confirmation document from the department that changed the forename?

No, she is 15. Adults can also do this.

It’s Definitely possible, like I said, it’s already been done.

Edited

Mine was accepted everywhere but it was a long time ago so I was unsure of anything had changed.

I’m not doing a deed poll - the change is entirely legal and valid so I’m waiting for an update from the passport office. I think due to being in England they don’t know much about this. They also didn’t believe Scottish social security was a government body and I had to send them evidence to confirm this.

Yes, a new birth certificate.

I didn't know if they had sent a confirmation other than a new birth certificate. No email or letter?

Well yes there is an email but it’s not an official document, unlike the actual birth certificate. It’s just a confirmation of the fee taken and a link to the website to order a new birth certificate.

I had my birth reregistwred as an adult. I had a passport that had expired with my old name and I simply applied for a passport and showed my birth certificate. No further questions. Was surprisingly easy. England not Scotland. Is it a tick box that’s incorrect and alerting them?

I have been going back and forth with them for a while now but finally spoke to someone slightly more helpful today so I am hopeful that will lead them in the right direction

Fingers crossed. It’s a real pain isn’t it.
