Would you buy Shein off Vinted?

For people that won’t buy off Shein for ethical reasons, would you buy Shein clothes off Vinted? I bought a dress that I really liked the look of from Vinted but didn’t realise it was Shein but now I don’t know how I feel about it? It’s too late to cancel as they’ve shipped it. I’m not paying Shein, it’s recycling, particularly what is a fast fashion brand, but is it still ethically bad?

I wouldn't buy it out of choice, and definitely not new, so I understand your dilemma. I am, however wearing a pair of Shein trousers that came in a mixed bundle from Vinted, so I do wear it.

Happycow · 03/07/2025 13:32

I mean quality issues aside, buying Shein from vinted has to be ok, its saving from it from landfill, stops the need for you to buy something new.

tammienorrie · 03/07/2025 13:33

No, it’s poorly made shite. Or She-ite.

Falingoth · 03/07/2025 13:51

I would, but then I buy from Shein new. It's cheap, and I can't afford expensive clothes. I also buy a lot from Vinted, and I've recently bought a Shein cardigan from there for £2, still with tags. Happy days.

No.

UrbanFan · 03/07/2025 13:58

yes

How could it be "ethically bad"?

The item has already been made and shipped. The environmental and social ethical impacts have already taken place.

If you didn't buy it, either someone else would or the seller would bin it.
The only further impact is the very minor environmental one of the seller posting it to you but that would be the same either if they sold it to someone else, or if you bought something else from a different seller, or ordered online at all. If you didn't buy anything from vinted at all and instead bought a brand new pair of trousers that would have a far more significant impact environmentally, even if you bought from an eco conscious brand.

The only possible effect is that the seller might be more likely to buy from shein again if they think they can make their money back from reselling but again that is very tenuous - again its likely that someone else would still buy it if you didn't, and even if they didn't, shein clothes are so cheap they'd probably still buy and bin.

The whole brand is tainted. Cheap, nasty disposable fashion made by slaves and child labour. Being second hand doesn’t cancel that out.

It also doesn't change anything buying it either.

Summerbean · 03/07/2025 19:44

I wouldn't buy it from anywhere let alone Vinted.

chipsandpeas · 03/07/2025 19:54

i have done, to get a smaller size of a dress i had bought from Shein and loved but was sold out

Thisshirtisonfire · 03/07/2025 19:57

Well you are saving it from landfill so yeah.. it's already been made and it's not like you are lining SHEINs pockets so I don't see the issue?
Other than quality..
I have a couple of SHEIN bits off vinted myself. One of them is a sequined jacket that has actually turned out to be really well made. I think it can be hit and miss with the quality.. but so can some high street brands tbh

Ohstickman · 03/07/2025 19:59

The postage alone on vinted would cost more than it would brand new on Shein 😂

Megifer · 03/07/2025 20:01

I buy new from Shein so would buy from Vinted. Have noticed some sellers really inflate the price though!

what do you mean?
"let alone" is used to specify the absolute worst option, so surely buying it second hand isn't as bad as buying it directly?

Comedycook · 03/07/2025 20:02

Yes and I have.

I assume vast majority of clothes we buy on the high street or from online retailers are produced in less than ideal circumstances...so I have no qualms with shein in particular. And at least if you buy through vinted you are saving it from landfill.
