Anyone up? Sat in A&E with DH

DH has just been taken to hospital with seriously high blood sugar - undiagnosed diabetes but he has a family history so we’re pretty sure that’s what we’re dealing with.

Not really after any advice just someone to chat to! They’re about to put him on fluids and try to get his sugar levels down.

What were his levels? What’s his health like generally?

I’m just up very quickly for a wee….couldn’t read and run….I’m holding your hand and wish you and your DH all the very best….such a cliche , but he really is in the best place….big hugs xx

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 03:16

@19ptrialprice 49.6 I think? I can’t remember tbh - it’s all a bit of a blur.

His health isn’t brilliant in all honesty, overweight and he drinks too much 😩 hoping this might be a bit of a wake up call, really.

I won’t comment on health. But he’s in the best hands and very treatable. But hopefully a wake up call for him. I’m sure he’ll be fine.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 03:22

Thank you @19ptrialprice - he’s fine in himself which is reassuring at least!

Hopefully they will be able to help him and he will be feeling much better soon.

Lavendersong · 03/07/2025 03:28

He’s in the right place

bizarrely adults who are fairly healthy don’t show signs of type 1 diabetes till later in life

I’ve known a handful of people like this

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 03:30

Thanks everyone ☺️ he’s fine in himself thankfully so the plan is fluids and glucose and then a treatment plan to send to his GP.

I’ve had about half an hours sleep and am just hoping the dog’s happy and settled with FIL as he’s never spent the night there before 🤣

I hope your DH is OK. I'm awake as I am also sat in A&E with my DP. He has had chest pain after having already having 2 heart attacks.
Hope you get some results soon. We've been waiting over 3 and a half hours now. Waiting for blood results.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 03:39

Oh god @Blodyneighbour that’s scary - I hope you’re both okay. Sending you a big hug.

We know his blood and ketone results, just waiting on treatment and then hopefully he can go home in a few hours. They admitted him really quickly but now seems to be a bit of a waiting game 😩

Hope both your DHs are OK.

godmum56 · 03/07/2025 04:18

Reaching out with hand holds to you both. I am sure dog will be fine. No reason for me to be up, first cool night we have had in a while so I can't sleep. You and your DH's are in the right place but hope you get home soon.

Rainbowqueeen · 03/07/2025 04:22

Dog will be fine. Just extra happy to see you when you pick him up!

Also hoping it’s a wake up call for your DH. Health is so important.

sashh · 03/07/2025 04:32

Have a hug from me too. And if you don't mind I will give your DH a virtual hug.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 04:39

Thank you so much (again!) he’s had some insulin and is on fluids now - he should be able to go home in a few hours and then follow up with the GP later (already has an appt booked).

I’m shattered and have had to cancel a day of work but I’m just glad he’s okay.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/07/2025 04:45

Im glad he’s ok op and he’s had some insulin. (I was a bit alarmed when you said that they were giving him glucose earlier!)

I hope you can get some rest today too op. Such a scary night you’ve had. Take care of yourself too.

TwinklyNight · 03/07/2025 04:59

It does sound like he is in good hands. My dh is diabetic also. Hope your dh will feel better soon and you can go back home. I'm sure your fil will take good care of your dd.(dear dog), probably spoil him with affection and let him sleep on his bed!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 05:04

Sorry @BitOutOfPractice it’s all a bit of a blur running on half an hours sleep and nasty hospital coffee 🤣

His sugars are down and he’s just having some toast so hopefully we’ll be heading home fairly soon!

OP posts:
tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 05:04

And yes I’m sure the dog is being thoroughly spoilt!

So worrying for you, hope he is doing okay. In your position I would insist they urgently refer him for tests to rule out problems with the pancreas x

Thank you, can I ask why?

He’s had lots of blood tests already but I don’t know what they checked apart from his sugars and ketones.

sudden onset of diabetes can indicate problems with pancreas, but it can also just be sudden onset of diabetes. Sounds like he has all the indicators of becoming diabetic, overweight, family history. Unless he has issues like back pain (often stomach boring into the back) or other symptoms of pancreas issues (so floating stools can be one) then i’d say they wouldn’t be overly concerned to do more tests. You could ask GP to test lipase / amylase I guess for reassurance.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/07/2025 06:28

Thank you @Zanatdy that’s really helpful. He doesn’t have any of those symptoms thankfully!
