My next-door neighbour was last night screaming at her daughter (11 years old) for about an hour at 10.30 p.m. I couldn't hear the specifics, but everyone's windows were wide open, so sound carried. I could hear the daughter sobbing. It was relentless.

My children go to the same school as the daughter, and I volunteer regularly there, so know the staff etc.

I worry about this little girl.

Do you think I should say something to the DSL at the school - or is it so far below meeting any sort of threshhold that I'd be considered a nosy neighbour / stirring things unnecessarily? It probably should be noted that the neighbour and I aren't on the best of terms anyway, so I'm conscious I might be over-reacting because I dislike her.

I'd be inclined to only say something if it was part of repeated behaviour. I don't think I'd do it as a one off. She will surely know it was from you anyway?

Yes, you should report, both to the school and to social services. You don't know how often this happens when the windows are not open. You also don't know if social care hold more info on this family and if this would help the family get support.

Imagine how that little child must have felt, to be screamed at for an hour. She doesn't necessarily have anyone else who will help, if you don't.
