Why would a child suddenly start bed wetting?

DS is 5.5, he's been dry at night fot a few years. In the last week he's been wet at night 4 times.
He's not symptomatic of a UTI, hasn't had any trauma to the area, no change in routine / anxiety etc.
Is it just the hot weather, or should I be taking him to the GP?

DS2 had a phase of bed wetting aged 5 - 7 due to laziness.

Might just be a mild urine infection.

JoyousGuide · 02/07/2025 07:23

I would get checked at GP for a urine infection as children often don’t have the same symptoms as adults. Could also be the hot weather and drinking more during the day or restless sleep. If it doesn’t improve the ask school for an appointment with the school nurse who will be able to give your further advice

It can be anything to laziness, is he drinking lots before bed? Or a UTI. If he’s drinking excessively (which is tricky because it’s hot) and excess weeing it can be a sign of type 1 diabetes. My son is type 1 but was waking up soaked in urine every morning. If it continues it’s worth asking the GP to dip his urine.

As well as medical reasons could be something psychological - often happens when a child is scared/worried. Sadly in some cases can be a sign a child is experiencing abuse. Worth exploring all angles if you can't find an obvious answer.

Even if it is just mild UTI they will give him antibiotics as he's male so he needs to be seen and yo rule anything else out.

Take him to the GP. Specifically ask them to test for diabetes. (It's a finger prick test). It's unlikely, but excessive thirst can be one of the first signs. You can show them the leaflet below.
If he has signs of illness, then don't wait for GP, and go to A&E.

Has he had any different foods/drinks due to the hot weather? Mine tended to have accidents if they've had a lot of squash/juice instead of water (I think there is a chemical in blackcurrant?)

JoyousGuide · 08/07/2025 16:19

@Girasoli you are right there is a chemical in blackcurrant juice that makes you wee more!

My daughter developed this at age 5 and after 10 days we took her to GP. Don’t want to worry you but after finger prick test and urine sample they diagnosed Type 1 diabetes and rushed us straight to hospital on children’s ward.

Is he constipated? If there's a blockage it can affect urinary continence as well. The Eric website could help with ideas to help: https: //eric.org.uk/

Please ask the gp for a finger prick test to rule out type 1 diabetes.
Suddenly wetting the bed was the only symptom my dc had when they were diagnosed. They were actually really poorly, but had no other symptoms and looked well and happy in themselves.
