Non screen activities for a 15 year old

I want to get something for my DS15 to do during the holidays when I'm working, to encourage him off screens. He's a young 15 (ASD) and too much screen time affects him. Open to any suggestions!

(Except Lego and jigsaws- have far too many of them)

Are there any game groups he could join ? Like dungeons and dragons?? Lego would be my first go to.

IKnowAristotle · 01/07/2025 21:28

Oh no, I was going to say Lego.

Solo board games.

War hammer - lots of time spent painting around games.

Origami

Adult colouring books

Weight training

Graphic novels

D&D or even just painting figures.
we were somewhere last week and DH was getting very excited by the airfix models of spitfires etc.

Volunteering - even in a non formal setting like helping out a neighbour or relative with dog walking or gardening.

Does your library have holiday activities?

Join a gym ?

Help him learn to cook with specific goals eg be able to cook 3 family meals solo by the end of the holidays. Any other life skills he needs to learn? Can he take over doing the grocery shop or other household tasks?

Cooking - my kids find hello fresh (or other similar kits) easy to follow and produce impressive results

similar to previous suggestions, libraries are often after teenage volunteers to help
out with the summer reading challenge.

Would he take on a fitness challenge? There are lots of different medals (some for charity) that you can work towards eg by virtually walking a famous route - eg https://www.theconqueror.events/ or race at your pace

Helpful.

Games workshop, all teen boys used to love that building and painting tiny thing, then having a battle with tiny things.

EagleOnTheWall · 03/07/2025 16:57

Doesn't seem to be anything like that near us unfortunately.

Sport is a contentious issue - he's supposed to do physio but refuses to do any kind of sport or fitness.

Will have a look at the library, thanks.

My ASD 12 yo is similar with screen time. Here are some things he enjoys. He needs a push to get started but will then get quite into them.

Gravitrax. It's basically an advanced, complex marble run kit, aimed at older kids and teens. I love it myself!

Or a kit to build something? We've done the KNex London Eye and I really fancy this cyborg hand:

You can probably pick up these types of things on EBay or Vinted if you want to save some money.

Cooking and baking. DS can make some incredible cakes totally independently from recipe books.

Learning to draw from a book - this one is excellent.

Gardening/plants. DS has cacti and also enjoys growing spider plants and propagating baby ones. Or he could grow some veg.

Rubik's/gan cubes. Lots of videos online showing how to solve.

Juggling diablo. Again, lots of tips online. But a great way to get him outdoors and moving, if you can't persuade him to do sport.

Climbing centre. I don't see it as exercise..

Do people still do geocaching?
