My ds is 20, has been to college but wants to take a year out before he starts work, maybe travel.
He doesn't really have any friends, is neurodiverse and doesn't really do anything on his own. He very much depends on me.
I'd like him to travel or maybe something within the UK, something to give him some independence but be supported.
Does this even exist?

20yo DD did a 3 week long group tour of Australia at the start of the year with TruTravels. Honestly she had the trip of a lifetime and made such amazing friends along the way. Didn’t want to come home!! After a hard few years health, friendship and education wise it has truly been the making of her and she came back home so much happier + more confident. Sounds cringeworthy but she definitely ‘found herself’ to some degree and has a new, ambitious zest for life.

DD didn’t want to travel completely solo so the group tour was perfect for her. They’re really popular with solo travellers and anyone who goes on them in Australia tends to be around 18-25 so it was a brilliant mix and she made friends very quickly. The tour was fully guided and DD felt really well supported, she would even accompany the group on nights out and made sure that everyone got home safe. You want peace of mind when your child is on the other side of the world and I definitely had it! The guide was a brilliant young lady and even helped organise a doctor’s appointment for DD when she fell ill. The company organised all hostels and transport so really the only thing she needed to do was book flights and turn up!

There are loads of companies like My Adventure Project and G Adventures who offer similar tours both in Australia and throughout the world. DD is aiming to do one in Thailand or Japan next

@Cappuccino5 thank you so much, that sounds great I'll look those up. Sounds like your dd had an amazing time.

My daughter did nearly a month in Thailand with The Mighty Roar. She volunteered for 4 days then travelled around Thailand with her group. She was going on her own so it was a good compromise to see the country without having to sort out travel and accommodation herself. She finished by having a couple of days on Koh Kood and Koh Chang by herself.

There are companies that do overlander trips. They have a big tough bus and put 20 young people and a bunch of tents and backpacks on board. And drive from place to place, for example around South Africa. They stop in a nice backpacker lodge for 3-4 days, then move onto the next one.

that can be a good option for making friends while travelling.

search for Africa Overlanders

Following for ideas- specifically for anything within the UK as my DC would not want to go abroad. Really feel there’s a gap in the market here!
