I posed a while ago that I was doing a neighbour’s shopping for a while and she only uses M&S. I’m on my own at the moment, and she told me to shop for myself as well, which I was very excited about-I though posh convenience food would be great in this heat. But I’m actually very disappointed- it all seems a bit bland and samey. So far the things I’ve liked best are some Eton Mess cronuts-sadly I can’t live on them , much though I’d like to! And some delicious blood orange and passionfruit cordial. Oh, and a crab linguini (once I added some chilli and lemon juice) What’s your favorite M&S ready meal?

Gluten free bread, ginger biscuits and gluten free fishcakes are lovely. Salad nice but nearly 4 pound for a tub- which I'd have with a main, is a bit steep

DailyEnergyCrisis · 01/07/2025 21:00

I like the marinated chicken flatties or kebabs with the Asian rice or the fresh grain salad pouches.
many of the m&s basic style biscuits are lovely and the Hugo spritz cocktail in a can.
Fruity iced spice buns are lovely, the superfood salad is great.

I had the shawarma dip tonight. Ate the entire thing, delish.

Their food is crap now and packed with additives and preservatives. Even their single packaged hard boiled egg is no longer free range.

Is that because of bird flu?

This is my favourite too, lovely little chilli kick to it. I haven't had it for ages, but this might be a weekend treat for me 😊

My mum buys their very small ready meals, things like cottage pie, because she won't cook for only herself (fair enough, I wouldn't either) and she has a very small appetite. They serve a purpose and she's eating something reasonably substantial.

I buy gold teabags and lots of basics like baked beans, ketchup, plain biscuits from M&S. They're the same price as Tesco, where I do most of the shopping, but they're much tastier than Tesco own brand. Their cakes tend to be nicer than other supermarkets' too.

ETA - so thinking about it, I use it more for basic items these days than seeing it as a treat shop like I used to. Interesting, I hadn't noticed that until now

Same here! Beans and cleaning products!

helloquitty · 01/07/2025 22:21

The marmite pinwheels
mini gingerbread men
fruit is much nicer @m&S I find. Well the kids say it’s nicer.
the chilli tortilla chips
the pizza meal deal is so good. 2 pizzas and 2 sides for £12.

partyboat356 · 01/07/2025 22:48

Their ready meal Indian food/curry is not as nice as it was. I used to love their King Prawn Bhuna but have had a few in the past 6 months or so and the flavour seems thin and lacking compared to what it was. I won't bother again.

Isn't that to do with biohazard security measures due to bird flu in the UK? No chickens are currently free range.

hhtddbkoygv · 01/07/2025 23:02

I used to love their ready meals but they changed the recipe a few years back and they're vile now.

Ah, I thought it wasn't just my imagination. They used to be so tasty,

Friend of mines husband is in fruit. He says that every supermarket basically gets the same fruit, except M and S, which pays a lot more and gets the best.

Our local food hall is shut. I thought we just went there for convenience as never buy ready meals. What we are missing is -
organic milk and butter - theirs is nicer than Sainsbury’s (how come? Dunno)
big bags spinach, Maris pipers (again, m&s seem better quality)
Fior des Alpes chees, mozzarella buccatini
greek style yogurt (Waitrose costs slightly more)
Found range red wine refosco and mar

Marzemino!

I don't know. I'm buying free range eggs from the supermarkets currently. I don't know what the situation is with bird flu.

I would say that is probably true, because I knew someone who had a turkey farm and they sold to lots of places but NEVER M&S as their rules and regulations, quality standards etc were so stringent.

The rules were relaxed recently as birds are having to be housed due to bird flu. The government didn't want suppliers to have to go to the expense of changing packaging and labelling so they are still allowed to package and classify them as free range (if they are usually free range)

Hope that makes sense.

Good to know! Though I do prefer mango from Lidl, I think maybe because they don't keep them in chiller cabinets they get riper.

Drangea · 02/07/2025 10:53

He just imports for Big 5….. doesn’t deal with Lidl, Aldi or those amazing massive bossman shops with tonnes of fruit outside, which I always think actually do have the best fruit!

ScribblingPixie · 02/07/2025 11:18

Bossman shops haha! Never heard that before but we definitely have one!

I think the price is very similar at my local butcher and at Booths for beef fillet. It’s always really expensive.

Booths doesn't surprise me if Marks' are charging that much, but I checked and eg Tesco wanted between £48 and £55 for fillet excluding wagyu, and Sainsburys were very similar, with Aberdeen Angus in the sixties.

That's an awfully big difference.

Sally20099 · 02/07/2025 18:58

i wouldn’t get my fresh fruit or puddings from anywhere else - different league vs other supermarkets.

Arlanymor · 02/07/2025 19:04

The Count On Us Roasted Vegetable, Mozzarella and Tomato Pasta ready meal is awesome, I got it on a flash deal from Ocado and thought might as well give it a whirl. I was genuinely surprised at how good it was - I tend to have a couple in hand now for days when I don't eat meat. And it's reduced calories - so win, win!

The times we live in.
I do their coffee & walnut cake though. I have it about once a year 🙂
