Vote: what time is acceptable for a family to have breakfast in their garden on a Sunday morning?

Assume this is a garden of a terraced house in a large city. Also assume the family have kids and dogs but it’s a normal sound level breakfast: talking but not shouting, no barking, no music.

7am is fine.

Bin collections start at 6am in many inner city places. That’s far noisier than an Al fresco breakfast.
Inner city also has bus services running regularly from very early.
It’s your garden, whatever time you want is ok. If people don’t like it, they should move to the countryside where they can complain about the church bells ringing instead.

I’m inner city. No 6am bin collections on a Sunday here! (Not usually in the week, either.)
And no buses down my very quiet road.

Weather like in the southeast at the moment from 7 but normal summer 8

well that's what I used to do

i miss it 😢

Our parakeets screech in the evenings, no sign of them in the mornings.

That does remind me of when BIL came to stay from the deepest countryside and complained that the garden birds (no parakeets back then) woke him up 🤣.

Ours screech all day long, they only moved in this year.

That’s annoying! Ours arrived this year too, though they’ve been in local parks for years now.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/07/2025 08:00

DH and I had breakfast in the garden at 7am. Chatting quietly. It's already stupidly hot but it's cooler in the garden at the moment.

Our bin men come today and they are starting an hour early because of the heat so we had to be up earlier to get the bins out in time.

My husband is up at 6.30 every morning but we wouldn't do anything in the garden before 9am on a Sunday

Giggsie · 01/07/2025 18:53

Thanks all.

my neighbours have put a note through the door complaining we had breakfast outside at 8am Sunday. I wanted to see whether most people see that as unreasonable. Of 640 who voted 51% think it’s ok. So I win by 1%!!

I honestly don’t think we were loud. We laid a table then five of us chatted and watched my adult daughter open birthday presents while we drank coffee and watched the dogs play. It was hardly a party.

After 8am IMO

comoatoupeira · 01/07/2025 18:57

I put mine in the garden every day at 6:15 including Sundays and last weekend I suddenly realised it must be really annoying for the elderly neighbours next door 😅

Growlybear83 · 01/07/2025 18:58

I don’t think any kind of noise is a garden is acceptable before 9 at the weekend .

Not on a Sunday though! Which is clear in the OP 👌🏻

PopThatBench · 01/07/2025 19:00

They complained about a birthday breakfast?
I’d be unhappy about construction noise/banging/cars revving etc. and loud shouting (unless it was a funny argument) but a nice little birthday breakfast wouldn’t bother me, even if it woke me up.

FalseSpring · 01/07/2025 19:02

Any time and in this weather it is sensible to enjoy the sun before it gets too hot.

They came at 11pm Saturday night last weekend. Which was interesting with all the residents' cars parked both sides of the road. I imagine that it's been to try and protect them from the worst of the heat as they're not usually here until between 5.30 and 6am.

The commercial bin collections start at 4.30am - the bottle disposal is the loudest; you can hear that from 2 streets away.

Your neighbours were disturbed though so clearly you were loud enough to disturb them, whatever 51% of MNers think.

Noise really carries in the still of the morning.

(As a one off I think it’s rather petty of them to have put a note through, but do you have form for thinking you’re not disturbing your neighbours this?)

Dearg · 01/07/2025 19:36

Your Neighbours are nuts. Hope you enjoyed your morning.

2chocolateoranges · 01/07/2025 19:37

At 8am on Saturday and Sundays our neighbour thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to hammer, mow the grass, power wash the garden , it’s so infuriating, do it during the week when everyone is getting ready for to go to work.

8am IMO is too early to be out in the garden at the weekend. 9am would be a bit more acceptable.

Wolfpinkola · 01/07/2025 19:39

On a Sunday? 10am

What an odd comparison. That's a service that takes no more than 5 mins maximum in most places.

hyggetyggedotorg · 01/07/2025 19:47

My neighbour’s out in his garden smoking weed & shouting at his dog (well, talking loudly) at 4.30am every day of the week.

8am would have been a nice lie in!

8 am breakfast is perfectly reasonable. It is breakfast, not construction noise. What passive aggressive neighbours. Their note could make me turn this into a tradition if it wasn’t one.

YesButNoButMayybee · 01/07/2025 20:34

It would have been more considerate to wait til after nine. But I wouldn't get het up over it if you were my neighbours.

AJLOAL · 01/07/2025 20:36

I'd say 9 ish

summerisawesome · 01/07/2025 20:41

9 - but only as it sounds noisy - so I’m equating it to kids playing outside
