How old were you when you had your mortgage paid off?

My mortgage is a psychological burden on me. It’s not huge but I’d like to have it paid off sooner rather than later. I have it in my head that it needs to be paid off right now.

Im early 40s and hoping to have it paid off by the time I’m about 58. If I’m not a pile of dust from the menopause by then!

I didn’t buy until I was mid 30s and took it over a 35 year term. Gulp.

I only bought my first house when I was 40 and hoping to pay it off by mid 50s (£500k mortgage and I think it’s a 26 year term). I think that’s pretty fantastic personally. My mum is 75 and renting, so being mortgage free in my mid 50s with significant equity will mean I’m in a very solid position. Similar for you, I wouldn’t feel burdened by it. Property is generally a great investment and not everyone can even afford to buy.

Loobyloo68 · 30/06/2025 17:12

I bought my first house when I was 25, moved 3 years later to a doer upper which I got cheap, so managed to pay off my mortgage and buy the next house in one go

AnneElliott · 30/06/2025 17:13

Completely get the psychological burden! Am hoping it’s gone by the time I’m 48. But I did have a mortgage from the age of 20 (H is a fair bit older).

Had our mortgage for 14 years.

Hoped to pay it off in next 6 but DH doesn't share my ambitions. I'm 46. It's a 30 year term so if we don't pay it off will have it till 60.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 30/06/2025 17:15

I'm nearly 50 and mortgage free. My exhusbands parents left me a significant amount when they died, which i used to pay off a massive chunk.

SqueamishHamish · 30/06/2025 17:17

I will be 50 when ours is done and dusted. Just in time to hand the money saved to my child for University.

KinshipCorner · 30/06/2025 17:17
  1. Paid off in 19 years and 6 months.

Overpaid for years and also had an offset mortgage (which probably no longer exists) so once we had more in savings than owing on the mortgage then it was also interest free so all payments ate away at the capital even quicker.

Our mortgage was by most standards very small. We bought a small house (the absolute top of what we could borrow at the time) and stayed here.

DH and I are are low earners but we’ve got by and the feeling of being mortgage free is amazing!

IndigoBluey · 30/06/2025 17:19

I’m not entirely sure but like you it plays on my mind. I bought my first property at 32 and then moved to my second property at 35 taking a 34 year mortgage. I do overpay by around 350 a month and it’s around 63% loan to value. Must do the calculations for when it is due to be paid off but please for now that I am overpaying

Parky04 · 30/06/2025 17:19

Paid off at 43 after 25 years. Never paid more than £500 per month, last 15 years it was as low as £200. Yes, I fully appreciate that I was born at the right time!

legyeleven · 30/06/2025 17:20

paid off by 42. Really feels great. Well
worth making overpayments. Even small
amounts add up

OneCosyCrow · 30/06/2025 17:21

I was 26. So six years to pay off.

forthistimeonly · 30/06/2025 17:22

48

MaryGreenhill · 30/06/2025 17:23

We were about 48 . We saved like hell and bought a terraced property when l was 19. Then we bought a semi when l was 24 . Then a detached at 33.

seanwinger · 30/06/2025 17:23

I was 42 years old when I had my mortgage paid off.

Strollingby · 30/06/2025 17:23

Took mortgage out at 24 (1990) and paid off at 41. Very happy to have done so as payments were diverted to pension, which let me retire at 55.

Namechange2567 · 30/06/2025 17:24

I should be 45 when mine is paid off but going to aim for 40

gigthenfishdelish · 30/06/2025 17:24

Hoping to be 60 unless a windfall happens before then!
Life has got in the way of any overpaying, sadly
30 year term taken out when 35
But have significant equity if the shit hits the fan in the meantime, so feel lucky in that respect

Falingoth · 30/06/2025 17:25

I think I was about 35 when we paid ours off.

Bookmarking · 30/06/2025 17:26

Hope to pay it off by 64. It can run till I'm 70 if need be.

cramptramp · 30/06/2025 17:27

My first one at 25. Still paying one in my 60’s and have never been mortgage free. I’ve never had an inheritance and had some ups and downs along the way.

Floranan · 30/06/2025 17:28

Got it 24 and paid off at 42, £550,000. Made some good investments which helped and lucky enough to move a few times at just the right time. Retired at 46 due to ill health. I’m 61 now and would rather be working than the have the health issues I have . Thought I was so lucky at 42, retired, mortgage free and a comfortable if not affluent life style, but wheel chair / housebound.. don’t wish your life away

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 30/06/2025 17:30

Will be paid off in January when my fixed term is up, I'll be 55. Single parent so quite proud of myself to do it all alone!

thickandcreamy · 30/06/2025 17:32

mortgage of 350k , got it at 23 & paid off at 38 .

Lovetoridemybicycle · 30/06/2025 17:33

On my 40th birthday.... Also the day I was made redundant, so that was one less thing to think about 😁

YourOnMute · 30/06/2025 17:36

I'm overpaying it as much as I can but looking at 60.
It's not hanging over me though. It's not a huge debt and it's my home.
