Having a major stress over a notice of intended prosecution

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 30/06/2025 11:49

Last week my dad was in hospital and had an endoscopy for suspected cancer. I was lost and in an area I didn’t know and slowed down to exit the junction I nearly missed. No accidents happened hwpbwr it wasn’t safe I know this and also I have no idea if it was that or even something else.

I’ve sent the form back and tried to get some legal advice. They’re stressing me out even more at this point saying well at the moment the hospital is irrelevant it depends on the severity and it’s in the hands of the police.

help?

If they throw the book at me is it points and a fine?

Yes, points and probably a £100 fine. Try not to panic, it feels like the end of the world but it’s not

Driving in an area you’re not familiar with of your dad’s health has nothing to do with you driving dangerously. Think yourself lucky you didn’t cause a major accident on the motorway.

Wise up and not stop being over critical judgemental!

Are there really people who send off dashcam footage to the police every time another driver makes a mistake?

Well, there are people who send dashcam footage to the police, our local force does use it for prosecution. I suspect like all things, there are those people who only report something unarguably bad/dangerous, and then you’ve got others who would report anything and everything, just because they can.

I’m neither, my dashcam is still in the glove box after it fell off for the millionth time.

You turned into a one way street the wrong way, or turned into a no entry, both potentially dangerous because no one is expecting a car to come from that direction. Lucky that wasn't careless driving.

No I didn’t turn into a one way street and it wasn’t a no entry either. There is a new sign about 100 yards before the turn to say there’s no left turn now. It’s purely revenue generating, having done some online research about the new restriction. Local residents don’t want it either as they have to do a long detour to get to their homes now - hardly environmentally friendly, and costly for those, like me, who missed the new sign. TFL has generated more then £750k in fines since it was introduce earlier in the year.

ScratCat · 30/06/2025 13:23

The formal letters can be intimidating. Like most of the population, you’ve probably never had one before.

You’ll likely get points and a fine. No worse than that. You’ll need to notify your insurers.

tallache1 · 30/06/2025 13:24

I have a dashcam and see people do stupid shit all the time but I’ve never thought to report it. So it must have been pretty bad for someone to go to the time and effort of downloading the footage and reporting it? Only you know how bad it was. Fingers crossed you just get fined and have to do a course but you may get points. Which again isn’t the end of the world. Just make sure you tell your insurance.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/06/2025 13:25

Don’t stress about this. In the grand scheme of life it’s small fry. If it’s points and a fine, so be it.

TruthOrAlethiometer · 30/06/2025 13:26

Stopped saying “slowed down.”
You said you had to cross lanes as well, not just pull off onto the exit road. So, you were in the outside lane and saw you were about to pass your exit, slammed on the brakes, crossed from your lane into the inside lane and then onto the exit ramp. Meaning you endangered any car behind you in the outside lane, any car driving in the inside lane when you pulled in front of them and any car already on the exit lane if you pulled in front of them.

Just plead guilty and do the awareness course and pay any fine. Stop going on about your dad; that has nothing to do with this.

A mistake that could have caused a crash?? A mistake that scared them? Why wouldn’t they?

I have come to hate driving. Last week I had to drop my sewing machine off for a service at a little business I’ve used loads of times. Two days later I picked it up. I turned off the main road where there was parking, which I have done countless times before, and have received two penalty notices with fines of £160 each. The rules must have changed since I last went there and the signage wasn’t enough to alert me that I can no longer turn left from the left hand side of the road, which seems ridiculous. I didn’t even have to cross traffic to do so.
Consequently, I won’t be able to use that small business again for fear of fines if I go down other nearby roads.
I wasn’t speeding, wasn’t causing a blockage in the road or any other nuisance. To me, this is a legal form of extortion, just as your ticket sounds it is.

Admit it - you did something wrong and didn't take enough notice of the signage. It is harder when things have changed but we should all be alert all the time when we're driving. Calling it 'legal extortion' is just daft.

The thought occurred to me, I just didn’t like to say. Grin

YouDoIDo · 30/06/2025 13:31

What’s done is done OP you can’t do anything to change it now. You fucked up and will have to accept the consequences but I very much doubt you will get a criminal conviction. You will most probably need to do a driving awareness course and pay a fine.
Sending hugs for your dad 💐

Totally agree, OP don’t allow posters on this thread to catastrophise on your behalf. You are doing very well with that on your own.

You’ve sent the letter back saying your were driving. You will then get another letter telling you your options. If you have a clean licence, you will more then likely be offered a driver awareness course, which can be done either online via teams/zoom, or at a centre somewhere. Easily booked, costs £100, job done.

Stop panicking and go and have something nice for lunch!

A lady I worked with drove the wrong way in a one way road, she admitted her mistake and got 3 points on her license and a small fine.

How on earth is that relevant here??

Lack of care and attention. That’s the notice info. Contacted a solicitor and he said “well if it gets to the stage you’re prosecuted xyz could happen” I’m in a very honest profession and that is very frightening for me.

'and had to move into another lane to get off probably slowing someone down.'

They probably nearly crashed into you

Driving without due care and attention is a lesser offence than dangerous driving. Probably points and a fine possibly a course. If the matter is dealt with out of court, such as through a fixed penalty notice, it will not appear on your criminal record.

MyDeftDuck · 30/06/2025 13:36

You have a right to request further details but I am puzzled who ‘they are’???

GinToBegin · 30/06/2025 13:36

Oh, and to echo what others have said, you do not need a solicitor. You really don’t.

GoldenOrangee · 30/06/2025 13:47

OP it will probably be a 100 pound fine and a course or 3 points on your licence.

Not ideal no but not the end of the world at all.

To loose your licence is saved for the serious offences or if you already have a certain amount of points - I imagine highly unlikely here.

HPFA · 30/06/2025 13:47

BellissimoGecko · 30/06/2025 13:29

A mistake that could have caused a crash?? A mistake that scared them? Why wouldn’t they?

Because we all make mistakes? Including the reporting driver.

Most of us do everything we can to drive safely but we're all human. Over thirty/forty/fifty years of driving all of us will occasionally make a mistake.

SockFluffInTheBath · 30/06/2025 13:51

I’m guessing ‘slowing down’ was actually stamping on the brakes? Just pay the fine and take the points. Unless you’ve got a collection of poor driving offences already you won’t lose your licence for this.
