Train cancellation

DS is stuck in London after all train journeys to Scotland have been cancelled due to train rail damage. Initially he could get as far as Carlisle but now that journey is cancelled. Flights to Edinbugh late tonight are £168 and are to an airport 2 hours away from home. A hotel room is £33 ( seems cheap)
He has insurance and reckons it would be cheaper to stay another night and aim for train tomorrow.
Does this sound a reasonable option and could he claim his travel insurance for the delay?

Why would he want to pay an excess to claim £33? Just stay overnight and travel tomorrow and enjoy a free day in London surely?

EmeraldRoulette · 30/06/2025 11:40

We would need to see the travel insurance before we could answer that question

Do you mean a hotel in London is £33?! or is it a hotel in Edinburgh that's two hours away from where he wants to be? Confused.

CountryQueen · 30/06/2025 11:41

And if he hasn’t booked the hotel yet he should do so without delay!

FrenchandSaunders · 30/06/2025 11:46

What sort of hotel is that for £33 in London! Are you sure it's not a shared room in a hostel?

Timeslip · 30/06/2025 11:54

Sorry for the lack of detail but the hotel room has now been booked in London - twin room £66. Flight to Edinburgh is about 2 hours away form home and flight to Glasgow which is a bit nearer is over £250 according to Skyscanner
It is not a free day in London when he will miss work tomorrow (has asked for annual leave) also expenses will be incurred staying an extra day. He only went overnight to a concert so l am sure there will be many people in the same situation
He asked me the insurance question and l have no idea of the policy details but l think it was more the flight he was thinking about- but problem solved.

He should be able to claim compensation form Avanti West Coast (assuming that's who he's travelling with if he's going via Carlisle) through the Delay Repay scheme.

BobbyGentry · 30/06/2025 12:07

Trains on the west coast are affected but he can get a train up on the east coast.

edited as got my east and west mixed up
through York

Has he actually checked flight prices directly on the budget airline sites? I don't think they show up on Skyscanner and I would be surprised if they were as much as that, even last minute.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/06/2025 12:10

He can claim for the cost of his ticket via Delay Repay. Last summer, LNER also paid our out of pocket expenses when the train we were on to London terminated at Peterborough. We had a Eurostat to catch, so we siccessfully reclaimed the £300 taxi journey from Peterborough to LKX.

He ‘should’ be able to show his west coast ticket to travel up on the east coast too as a detoured route.

itsgettingweird · 30/06/2025 13:03

My ds is travelling Edinburgh to Stansted in an hour. The flight was £150 return with 23kg hold luggage. Look at easy jet as basic flight is about £50 max one way.

It was a toss up between flight and train but I’m glad we went flight now!
