Which pharmacy for nhs adhd prescriptions

My local Boots is taking about 25 days to fill an elvanse prescription. Regularly. Is there an online alternative I could use that is more reliable? Any recommendations?

Its hard enough keeping on top of monthly repeat prescriptions without chasing up or having hours (not joking i once got less than 24 hours to collect before the 28 days or whatever ran out from the date the pharmacy received the prescription). Turned up the day after and they'd locked it in the cupboard and wouldn't/couldn't dispense. Which then kicked off having to chase up drs and messing up the next repeat prescription date.

I can deal with a lead time of 5-10 days but over three weeks is taking the piss for someone trying to keep the wheels from falling off about 20 times a day!

Could you ask your GP to prescribe more than a month's medication at a time? It seems mad that they aren't, is this a new prescription so they are seeing how you cope with the dose?

Look for an independent pharmacy. Way better than boots or Lloyds.

GP’s generally don’t prescribe more than a month of Elvanse at a time anymore, my partner is on it.

For those suggesting local independent pharmacies, three have gone under this year in the local area which messed up a lot of peoples prescriptions. I'd like a National or regional chain that is unlikely to do this, i wfh 90% of the time so delivery isn't a problem.

The local boots is clearly struggling, it's a min 20 min wait at any time and they never pick up if you call and there's no way to send them a message over email.

Is this the state of English pharmacy now? I've tried to check stock levels on boots and can't see there is a current medicine shortage alert out there

Pharmacy 2 U online did my daughters within 2 days and post it directly to you.

I would look around to other local recommendations on your local fb groups as we dont know where you’re from. IME boots and Lloyds are awful. With ordering online you risk them sending you the wrong thing, this happened before with me with an online pharmacy.

Daisymay2 · 30/06/2025 10:58

Can’t really rely on the chains not to close branches either. Lloyds and Boots have closed at least one locally.
Believe me, no pharmacy wants to take 25days to dispense a script . They have spent a lot of time trying to source your medication as well as responding to you chasing it. There are huge medicines shortages at the present and it’s not the pharmacists fault.
Not convinced about getting scripts on line either, we are only getting Royal Mail delivery once a week.

Ours is part of Pearl Pharmacy group and they do our Elvanse in 2 days.

Boots gave me someone else's tramadol when I needed triptans.... It's down to human error, but whether it's remotely ordered.

OP, I use Chemist4U for all my prescriptions after faffing about trying to find anyone with stock of my migraine medications. They had everything on the shelf, presumably because of their size so have more available.

I only use the local pharmacy for acute prescriptions, and I absolutely hate going in there. It's so badly managed and the dispensary staff are absolutely terrible. And I used to be a dispenser, so I'm happy to critique from a position of knowledge and understanding of the role!!

Not a chance with a controlled drug I’m afraid

Maybe it can differ from where you are. I found the website you’re recommending incredibly slow to approve scripts and deliver

I use the app. It usually arrives 4-5 days after I order it on their app, similar time if I order via the NHS app. Any delays are at my GP tbh.

Our independent pharmacy struggled to fill DS1's ADHD prescription so we moved to Well (Coop) and they have been superb. Never missed one, even if it meant combining several tablets to make up his dose.

I like to support our local pharmacy (and we do use them, regularly) but for shortage drugs they sometines don't have the resources that the better run nationals have.

PickAChew · 01/07/2025 09:17

And the pharmacy closures are a real issue. This doesn't even mention that they're also now being required to fulfil a lot of roles that GPs used to do, without additional funding.

I use them too. There were a few months last year when they were the only place that had it in stock, then they got hit with stock issues too, but after a while it was resolved and I've never had an issue with them.

nodogz · 03/07/2025 22:47

Will sign up with pharmacy to you then (although I wouldnt mind receiving someone else's tramadol)

I don't think boots are even going to meet the 30 days limit this time. I phoned up the branch 15 times yesterday (no answer) and it's minimum of 15 people queuing at any time so I can't just pop in.

It's so depressing that these first line services (GP, pharmacy) are so difficult to access and obviously struggling for resources

I moved my repeat prescriptions (including my ADHD meds) to Boots as they were much better than my local pharmacy. But my past 2 prescriptions have taken ages. I’ve been waiting for 3 weeks for my current one so looks like I need to go and queue up to find out what is going on. They used to be so quick but that has suddenly stopped. And if I order my prescription too “early”, my GP surgery rejects my request. So stuck between a rock and a hard place. It really shouldn’t be this hard!

AquaCat93 · 03/07/2025 23:27

I don't think this is about the pharmacy- it's about the supply issue with ADHD meds. Most pharmacies won't keep large amounts of these in stocks as they are controlled drugs. When you get a prescription, you can ( as you know) collect it from any pharmacy in the UK. So you call round the pharmacies and find out who has stock. If your prescription has already been sent to your local Boots, and they don't have it, you ask them in person or on phone to put the prescription 'back on the spine'. You can then go and collect it from anywhere.

I found online deliveries a bit hopeless, as its more complicated to cancel it if there's a stock delay.

AquaCat93 · 03/07/2025 23:28

Also to add - I found central city pharmacies especially those near train stations to hold more stock of ADHD meds.
