Do you watch your own shows on TV while your children are around?

We have young DC and we let them watch TV but try to do other things as well. If they're not watching something then the TV is off. I love TV but only watch it in an evening when they're in bed.

As a child I remember my mum watching the soaps (not sure how young I was) and kids' tv wasn't on constantly like it is now. In theory I should be able to watch tv sometimes provided it's family friendly but then I don't want the tv on constantly as it was in my parents' and still is:

What do you do in your house?

I watch the 1% club while I’m folding the washing. DD is always slightly outraged by it, which makes me think it’s a good idea for her to learn not everything revolves around her preferences!

To me it seems worse to watch tv shows on an iPad with headphones around your kid.

As long as shows aren’t completely inappropriate I don’t see what’s wrong with children realising certain things in the home, like the tv, belong to the family and everyone has a turn.

There was a CBeebies phase but never a CBBC phase for our DC.

Eldest is 19 and got into films from quite an early age. Animations Disney and Ghibli etc. from 5 he could engage with and dissect. We had (still have) dvd/blueray and they formed family viewing at weekends when he was younger. As regards TV, I like quiz shows and watching Pointless was a family thing from primary years and was probably the only family viewing at that age.

I do like a box set/streamed tv series every now and then and DCs often share same. As far as DH is concerned, there's footie, rugby etc. but no one is that keen

Yes but I keep it age appropriate.

When they were babies and I was breastfeeding/they wanted to be held a lot I was less concerned about age appropriateness, but as they got older and more aware that changed.

Things like eastenders/corrie are generally fine to have on around kids imo apart from the odd post-watershed episode or when there’s a particularly sensitive storyline going on and even then it depends on their age, it might be fine for teenagers to watch but not younger children. I’d watch The Simpsons around them, but not something like South Park or Family Guy. Documentaries about nature/animals/history are generally fine at any age, but true crime type stuff wouldn’t be suitable until they were older and depending on the content/subject. Sports is always fine to have on around them as well as quiz/game shows (for the most part).

This is largely how it was when I was growing up, my parents would watch a lot of ‘their’ programmes but I don’t remember being exposed to anything inappropriate for my age, no excessive bad language or raunchy scenes. Possibly some subject matters that I was a little young for at times but most of that probably went over my head anyway especially if I wasn’t actively watching it and just happened to be in the same room. It’s just about using common sense really isn’t it. Its good for them to understand that the tv isn’t just theirs and that we all get a chance to watch things that we want to watch on it.

Not really in the day time while DS2 is awake (exceptions being sport or sometimes the news) but in the evening I watch TV with DS1 (10) for a bit and save anything inappropriate for after he's asleep. Tbh I don't enjoy many gritty TV shows so mainly DS1 usually just alternate choosing (he likes football and sitcoms like the middle or fresh off the boat), and I like property/cookery shows and family friendly movies and rom coms.
