Why are travel passes issued at different ages?

Although this won’t affect most Mumsnetters yet, the day will come when it might. A sixty year old in London and Liverpool can get a pass for public transport at sixty. For the rest of England it’s State Pension age, which I believe is currently 66.

I have no personal axe to grind, I’ve had mine for years, but I think it’s unfair that the rules are different depending on where one lives in England.

The qualifying age in Scotland, Wales and N.I. Is also 60.

Devolution. Mayoral combined authorities. Etc.

I realise that, I live in a MCA, just wondered how some go for it and others don’t? 60 liverpool, 66 Manchester. It’s obviously not an issue to anyone on here, but some may feel differently when they hit their 60s.

It’s ridiculous. Should be retirement unless means tested.

I can't get mine until I am 67, I know a friend in London who got hers at 60. It doesn't bother me because I rarely use public transport.
