Period cup

Need some practical advice about period cups. I'm 37 and done having babies, and only about 4 or 5 periods in after finishing breastfeeding my youngest. I've not really had to deal with the outlook of periods for the foreseeable for about 6 years, since starting having babies. Now I'm hating them and hating tampons, but hate pads more (and therefore think I would hate period pants too, I feel so unclean) so want to give period cups a try, but have no idea where to start. Brand? Cup shape? Disc shape? Arghhh!

I had a Ruby cup, but then had a coil fitted as part of HRT a few months later, so no more periods.
I wish they’d been around a lot longer.

You can get cups from Boots or Amazon, they are great!

I use Mooncup! I have used 2 in 20 years or so.

Cups have been a game changer for me!
Started with an organicup (size b as I've had children) but my flow was too heavy and the shape a little off (a bit long despite trimming the stalk).
Now i use a Merula xl cup and have done for years. It's wider and more Bell shaped with a higher capacity. On my heavy days, I maybe empty it every 6 hours, otherwise 12hours works perfectly.
I used to wear panty liners as well, just in case, but after a while, you become familiar with how to insert and remove it without mess.
I have a microwave steriliser pot too, quick and easy.
Do it...take control! Periods suck!!

Love it here too - one mooncup 18y. Life changing !

Agree with other posters, an absolute game changer (along with period pants). I have heavy periods but can actually forget I'm on my period now I use a cup and pants (on the heaviest days) combo! Agree with the comparison website flagged above too. I use a diva cup.

Another vote for Mooncup, 15 years and counting. It does take some practice & getting used to but never looked back. Wish they were more widely talked about.

LemonRedwood · 28/06/2025 23:13

I tried a mooncup but found it quite rigid and never seemed to be able to get it to open up properly once in.

I then got a me-luna, one of the ones with the ring shaped handle bit and have been incredibly happy with it for the last 10 years. I find the ring makes grabbing hold of it to remove much easier.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the advice, I went for the Saalt cup and it's been an absolute game changer!!! Apart from day 1 where I need to change it half way through the day, I barely need to think about it. I can't feel it, don't need to worry when being out and about, no horrid waste bin to deal with etc etc. Can't believe I used tampons and hated them for so long! So for anyone else who comes across this post in search for a better period solution.... Do it, buy the cup!

That for the update. I’ve had 2 in 20 years, so much waste saved and mess avoided.

I tried the mooncup but found it uncomfortable because I wasn't relaxed enough to cut the whole stem off and then even with a small stem I couldn't take it out.
I sort of understand why there have been some cases of prolapse with them.

FlyingCarpetRide · 01/11/2025 08:13

I do find it's harder to pee with them, easier to pee with tampon. But they are my go to when heavy

Oh really? Can't say I can even feel mine, even when peeing - I could defo feel a tampon. Have you defo got the right fit? Someone posted a link above for a quiz to find the best fit, and the one that was recommended to me has been a great fit.

I haven't cut any of the stem off mine. I believe the stem isn't to be used to pull it out, it's just a guide to help you find the base of it. That's the case for the one I have anyway!

You're probably right, but if you haven't cut the stem off, isn't it uncomfortable. Sounds like you wear it higher up than I did then if you can't feel the stem.
