What's wrong with my friend?

I have a friend who's diabetic and doesn't really take care of herself. She eats rubbish.

Just lately she's had constant diarrhoea and not wanted to eat anything except cup a soup. She's also had excruciating back pain. She collapsed yesterday and was taken to hospital for tests. They've stabilised her blood sugar.

She's having a colonoscopy and also she's got a large scab on one of her boobs and they think there's a lump there. Obviously I'm fearing the worst.

Any thoughts please?

Just be there

she’s on a suicide mission be the sounds of it

Pingiop · 28/06/2025 17:05

You don’t need to know unless she’l tells you I’m afraid.

I'm concerned she found a lump and did nothing about it. She's messaged tonight saying she's in so much pain, presumably with her back, this is while she's in hospital on meds.

Could it be kidney damage due to uncontrolled diabetes?

That's exactly why she wouldn't call the doctor in the first place because she was scared it was that rather than sciatica. She was very dehydrated and was given fluids and electrolytes.

@WinterKitchen Nothing is wrong with your friend.

Your friend is a victim of a broken food supply, like the majority of people across the country.

No, it's not due to individuals making bad choices- if that was the case, it would only be a very tiny minority of people who eat bad food.

Psychologically, it isn't surprising that your friend has mental health issues given that most people are disgusting sacks of shit.

Havetheweekendoffreports · 30/06/2025 06:08

People like your friend are precisely why the NHS is on its knees

Morningsleepin · 30/06/2025 10:00

I'm sorry to hear your friend is so ill. People think diabetes is a death sentence so they don't alter their diet as they should. But I've known people who've lived to the age of 90 with diabetes by being careful with their diet.

Karatema · 30/06/2025 15:00

If she’s not careful she’ll lose her sight and possibly end up having amputations! Diabetes is not to be taken lightly, as my cousin well knows.

Jujujudo · 30/06/2025 15:02

Does she have type 1 or 2?

Unless you have diabetes - shut up. It is rentless and 24/7 thinking about every tiny decision.

justkeepswimingswiming · 30/06/2025 15:05

If type one most likely she went into DKA. Type two most likely done a hell of a lot of damage to her body.

MissMoneyFairy · 30/06/2025 15:23

Sorry your friend is so unwell, I hope she gets the help and answers she needs soon, so many horribleness righteous posts on here, we don't know the friends situation, can't people just wish her well.

I think the point is…. The friend doesn’t think about it at all in her diet and lifestyle

Aseveritisme · 30/06/2025 15:46

Does she live alone Op? Any children?

WinterKitchen · 30/06/2025 19:25

She's been type 1 since age 11. Lives by herself yes and doesn't work.

Her backs still hurting. She's on morphine for it (a certain kind that diabetics can have)

She was kind of talking ok one minute but then was really confused and saying strange things, it comes and goes.

They're looking Into the lump/scab on her breast - if its what they think it is it could have spread which may be causing the pain in her back.

One of her kidneys isn't good due to her not eating much for a long while which could be causing the pain in her back and the confusion eg DKA. They're treating this with magnesium etc.

When she first went in she had a temperature which they've given her antibiotics for (they couldn't tell at the time where it is but could also be in her kidney or that area causing the pain and confusion)

She's had a blood transfusion yesterday as she as very anaemic also due to her diet.

They originally said they wanted to do a colonoscopy but not heard of that’s happening yet.

Her vision has gone, she said she can just see white. And her hearing isn’t good. They’re getting her a prescription hearing aid.

I agree that a lot of this is self inflicted though I'm worried sick.

It sounds like she has mental health problems and isn’t capable of looking after herself. At least she’s in hospital now.

Mumof1andacat · 30/06/2025 20:11

She is clearly unwell mentally and physically and I hope the hospital can help her now.

Borntorunfast · 30/06/2025 20:22

If she's in DKA then it's not a good outlook I'm afraid: DKA can cause a lot of damage relatively fast, so it depends on how soon they caught it. The upside is that it's very treatable so she'll have begun responding as soon as they stabilised her blood glucose.

It's worth noting for anyone who hasn't picked it up: OP's friend has type 1 diabetes, which is not lifestyle-related. But, as a poster upthread commented, type 1 is a relentless bastard of a condition to manage, and some people get diabetic burnout - and make very bad decisions because of it.

It does sound like your friend needs a lot of psychological support, OP - I hope she gets it, and that she responds to the help she's being given. Just be there for her, that's all you can do now x

MissMoneyFairy · 30/06/2025 20:58

Poor girl sounds very poorly and will need a lot of tests, are they are thinking breast cancer that may have spread maybe to her bones. I hope she's as comfortable as she can be, and that you get some support too, does she have any family.

Messycoo · 30/06/2025 21:11

Depression is quiet prevalent with diabetes, so she may have been neglecting herself.
the hospital will have done all her bloods and should of checked her urine.
She may have a lump due to her skin not healing if say she has scratch herself, for example and being a diabetic skin and overall issues can take longer to heal and repair.
Please don’t think the worst. You are being a good friend by showing concern for her. Which I’m sure when she feels better she will appreciate.

Type one diabetes is not caused by our food supply.

I’m not sure why you’re saying there’s nothing wrong with her when she’s clearly very porly.

I have no idea what your last sentence is getting at.

shuggles · 30/06/2025 22:10

@Alltheyellowbirds Type one diabetes is not caused by our food supply.

I replied to the thread before OP clarified it was type 1. Do you know how time works?

My assumption that it was type 2 was reasonable given OP's statement that the friend eats rubbish.

I’m not sure why you’re saying there’s nothing wrong with her when she’s clearly very porly.

This is just being obtuse. I was clearly saying that her poor diet is the fault of society, and not her.

You assumed it was type 2 without asking and seemed to have some personal point to make which isn’t relevant. Complications from type 1 can be very serious and she could be extremely poorly.

WinterKitchen · 01/07/2025 08:54

On top of the diabetes related issues it's thought she has Paget's disease which accounts for the scab. Not looking good at all.
