Being told if you don't like the rules maybe the job is not for you. Legal?

Posting on behalf of my sister. She was very honest with me on her behaviour.
She has worked behind the bar of a private members club.
Started June 2024 so less than 2 years.
She is a very vocal person and has started to assert herself questioning everything.
( I know her and can imagine how she acts )
Last night she was advised that maybe the job is not for her if she can't follow the rules made by the committee. But was also told that she is a good worker and they don't want to loose her as long as she follows the rules.

I've advised her to just do the job and keep her mouth shut. As she has worked for less than 2 years they can get rid when they want.

Am I right.

She wouldn't give the discount to the visiting team.

My sister has had more jobs than Ive had hot dinners.
Don't ask about her relationships.
Of course everything is someone else's problem.

I love her but my goodness she is mouthy.
Eldest child.

She sounds like a total nightmare. She’s works behind the bar not on the management team. When it’s her establishment she can make the rules. Until then she should follow the rules put in place by the actual management.

I would fire her if I was her boss. The fact that she’s had so many jobs pretty much says it all.

ahe sounds terrible lol it’s a totally reasonable rule as well not even something unjust that there is merit in challenging. I can see why she’s had loads of jobs

ThatCyanCat · 27/06/2025 16:57

She's the bartender, management told her to give the team a discount and she refused?

Clearly she's not suited to this job but she won't be suited to any others either if she can't tell which decisions are and are not within her remit to make - and there was no question about this one!

Wow 😂😂 I assumed you were going to say along the lines of strip clubs 😂😂

There may be no fixing this attitude, try not to get drawn into her dramas.

I used to know a woman like this. Couldn't keep a job and her personal life was a disaster. Always the others sides fault for being unreasonable. I met her for lunch once and when I said I had to get back to work she was outraged on my behalf that it wouldn't be okay for me to stay and enjoy more time with a friend and be late back. I really don't think she could understand what would be wrong with that. As far as I remember I think she was eventually diagnosed with BPD (I dropped her as a friend pretty quickly due to being dragged into dramas, initially sympathetic I realised they were all of her own making).

It seems that a snooker team was visiting and they were given discount on the drinks the same as a member for the cup match.
I tried to explain that if the team weren't playing against another team there would be no game and these visitors wouldn't be in the club.
This is just one thing she was complaining about.

She must keep this kind of rule. It’s not her job to decide who gets a discount. If she wants a decision-making job she needs to work her way up.

dunroamingfornow · 03/07/2025 08:15

Some people really struggle with “ grey” areas. Is she overly pedantic about other things? Either way seems like she’s going to eventually get sacked if she can’t do as management instruct

Bloody miracle she's still got a job.
The committee are very tolerant IMO.

Of course you are right, she is clearly going to lose the job if she continues this way so I’d drop the rope.
