Why is my cat miaowing!?

I’ve had this username in the bank for years since I used to be forced to watch Thomas for days on an end by a child who is now as tall as me….but how appropriate today!

My cat won’t shut up.
He has form for taking joy from being annoying, but this seems different.

For two days he has kept it up. He follows me to the car, he follows me walking the dogs, he comes to the window of whatever room I’m in…and he shouts.

He’s obviously trying to tell me something, but what??

He seems pretty healthy, but I’m starting to worry!

Do you live near a well?

Is there any chance a child has fallen into the well?

I think you need to follow him

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 27/06/2025 12:52

Mine got like this when his thyroid started malfunctioning. He was telling me he was hungry. Allllllll day, miow, miow, miow.

OhShutUpThomas · 27/06/2025 13:00

He has food in his bowl!!

There actually is an old well in the woods, but sadly I can’t check it because of The Ring.

He has lost weight recently but we moved to the middle of nowhere, so he can’t go down the street having dinner at each house any more. He looks a picture of fit feline vitality tbh.

Here it would be:

Hungry (but hates the food in his bowl even though he loved it last week)
Wants a cuddle
Wants you to play with him
Wants to lead you to something he needs help with (e.g. toy got stuck somewhere)

PluckyBamboo · 27/06/2025 13:13

Is his food fresh, if biscuits have been sitting out for a couple of days has he snotted on one rendering the whole bowl inedible?

Or, a microscopic speck of dusk in the waterbowl?

An invisible to you skidmark in his bed?

Maybe the weather our noisy cat is nosier than usual. He loves to tell you what has happened when he comes in from the garden

Sorry OP, but laughing my tits off at this 😂😂😂

moretea · 27/06/2025 13:46

Are you sure it's you he is miowing at? Can he sense another presence?

PulchritudinousLycanthrope · 27/06/2025 14:03

Is he passing urine?

Neutered toms can get blocked bladders, especially if their routine is upset and they don't use their tray.

DontSpareTheTalons · 27/06/2025 14:22

Losing weight and meowing more than usual is cause for concern. I would take him to the vet.

EmeraldRoulette · 27/06/2025 15:44

Have you checked his teeth?

pinneddownbytabbies · 27/06/2025 15:58

After getting the cat checked over by a vet to rule out a health issue...

Are you pregnant?

Courgettezuchinni · 27/06/2025 16:13

Our 12yo Dcat lost weight and started calling, especially when she comes in through the cat flap or wakes up from sleep. It's like she wants reassurance where we are in the house - so we just call her name back and she settles. We took her to the vet and they did all the usual tests (including blood tests for thyroid etc) and all test results were normal. She can hear the rustle of cat food packet in another room so is not deaf either. Our vet reckons she may have dementia.

Notaripoff · 27/06/2025 16:18

Our pretty noisy boy has been even noisier recently. I think maybe it's the warm weather (if that applies to you).

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 27/06/2025 16:25

Could be the cats kidneys or thyroid. Our bengal boy did this constantly and it was his kidneys. Please get him to vets for bloods.

Ps thyroid checks are a bit more expensive
Good luck x

smallglassbottle · 27/06/2025 16:55

Definitely get him checked. The vets are good at finding out if something's wrong and have techniques for doing so as animals can't talk.

Cats are adept at hiding illnesses as this is what they have to do in the wild. He could be in pain and he's asking for help.

I'd forgotten about thyroid problems, our boy was manic (Siamese) to the point where I was ready to gaffer tape him. He was diagnosed, given Thyronorm and he settled down quite quickly.

A trip to the vets is in your immediate future lol

Im not sure, he keeps his toilet arrangements extremely private 🤔

Definitely not!

I don’t mind taking him to the vet but all I can say is ‘he is miaowing but otherwise fine’ and they will laugh at me then charge me for the fun they’ve had.

His teeth seem ok.

He is up to date with working etc.

Doesnt seem dehydrated.

Maybe if he’s still miaowing over the weekend I’ll take him on Monday. Obviously sooner if he suddenly becomes ill. Between all the pets, it has been a very expensive month at the vets, it’s like they have all made an agreement to empty my bank account.

Ok so I've been veterinary staff for 45 years and if you called in, I would advise you to make an appointment to see a vet and if you did not want to do that, I would strongly advise you to keep him in and give him several litter trays to make sure he can pee.

A lot of cat food has grain in it and grain has oxalates. Oxalates accumulate to form stones and gravel in the bladder and in neutered toms their urethra becomes a little small (because they don't have sex) and this narrowing can trap even a tiny bit of oxalate crystals and form a blockage.

Left untreated, this is at best, agony and they can die from this.

If you have had a UTI you will know 1/10 of how painful this is.

Greenartywitch · 27/06/2025 17:43

Take him to a vet for a check-up.

My previous cat started getting much more vocal, including at night when she started developing thyroid issues.
