What is a carer's assessment?

I look after (in a very casual way) an old neighbour (because the social work dept are worse than useless) and they've contacted me and offered to carry this out for me. What's that about?

Hopefully someone who knows the system will be along soon but in your position I would be concerned that they are trying to formalise the care that you give so that you bear more responsibility. Which may not be in your nor your neighbour's best interest.

Thank you. I'm not going to partake. Can't see any reason to.

Maybe when you let them know you don't want an assessment tell them that you don't need it because you are NOT a carer, just someone who is neighbourly. Just to make sure that you don't get noted as a carer on any documentation.

They are not trying to formalise the care you provide. This is an assessment to check on YOU, where most carers' lives and conversations are focused around the cared for this is something which makes sure the carer is receiving all of the support they need to carry out their role effectively. In our area, this can mean assistance to make sure you're receiving the correct benefits (carers allowance, etc.), and have all relevant agencies involved to lighten the load. Some people can receive one off payments to use towards something they enjoy (gardening, massages, mini breaks, etc) and you can use that money however you like without providing 'proof'.
