…and you have just discovered that what would usually be a 1 hour 12 minute train journey and a 10 minute walk each way will now, because of train problems, will be at least 3 hours each way, much of it on a non air conditioned bus, would you still go?

Nope

Verite1 · 25/06/2025 21:47

Yes I would.

Appendixquestion1234 · 25/06/2025 21:48

You said a fire affected the train station. I'm guessing MCR. Try the Voco hotel on Portland Street, it was perfect for friends of ours to stay after watching Pulp on Saturday

tinyspiny · 25/06/2025 21:51

Can you drive ? I would not be spending that long in a bus . Is this the signal fire at Rainham ?

goingroundthebendatthisrate · 25/06/2025 22:29

It would all depend on so many factors, such what I was going to see, how much "expensive" was, what I was doing that day, what I was doing the day after, and so on. It's not a black and white question.

doubleshift · 25/06/2025 23:12

Drive and park

ODFOx · 25/06/2025 23:24

Book a hotel so you don’t need to worry about the return journey. Have a great time!

bumblingbovine49 · 26/06/2025 07:35

No. Not unless I could stay over. I'd see the money as wasted. It was spent for something I would enjoy, as a way to chill out and relax. A 6hr journey in one day on top of the play would in no way be fun.

Runnersandtoms · 26/06/2025 07:40

I would, but would possibly look into whether I could drive to a different town with a working train line rather than taking the bus. Or look at driving to the edge of the underground. If it's Kent, it's pretty easy to park near Greenwich and get in from there.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/06/2025 07:41

I’d drive.

CurlewKate · 26/06/2025 07:57

It’s not hot today and the trains are running anyway-so all academic. Thanks all!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 26/06/2025 07:58

I still would. But if it’s London I’d consider parking on the outskirts and getting the tube in. Plenty of stations where it’s easy to park for the day.

Secretsquirels · 26/06/2025 08:00

Yes, I would still go. And I would treat myself to a new book for the journey, take some nice snacks etc and make a day of it 😊

Hermiaxx · 25/06/2025 21:42

Definitely! I only have a cheap seat but I also have a ticket for tomorrow!

I hope we have fun! It looks tremendous…

good they’ve got the line fixed! Have fun.

GluttonousHag · 26/06/2025 09:09

Tell us what it was like.

Hermiaxx · 26/06/2025 09:12

I can’t wait 😝!

PullTheBricksDown · 26/06/2025 11:13

You're making me think about getting a ticket now! There are a few left. Hope it's really good - do tell us.

DontTouchRoach · 26/06/2025 11:49

I’d go.

Comefromaway · 26/06/2025 12:05

I hope you have gone OP. There will be alternative train routes even if it involved getting a taxi/bus to another station.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2025 12:44

Have a fantastic time 😊

Lafufufu · 26/06/2025 12:46

Yes
Get a fan and decent book and settle in

Hermiaxx · 26/06/2025 22:31

I went to the matinee performance today and it was absolutely brilliant! This was in part due to the (mostly) school children in the pit area. They were fully engaged and often screaming with delight, which was a real joy. The overall production meant this was the best Shakespeare play I’ve seen to date! It was genuinely funny and very entertaining! I think Will would’ve been proud! Well done Nick!

I only booked the (seated) tickets at the beginning of the week and there was availability but there were far more empty seats than I expected (there was chaos at London Bridge station due to rail problems so hope @CurlewKate was able to get into town today!).

CurlewKate · 27/06/2025 07:08

Hello @Hermiaxx! I was just coming on to say roughly the same thing-wasn’t it great? And I think this is the first time I’ve ever thought school parties added to a performance! I liked the little bits of modern English thrown in-i thought that was a very clever way of making sure anyone who didn’t know the play would get the subtleties too. Loved Oberon being the one “enamoured of an ass”- that worked really well. I think it’s certainly the funniest Shakespeare I’m ever seen.

There were plenty of seats-I don’t know why I thought it was sold out- and I actually think it wouldn’t matter where you sat. Please go if you can!

Hermiaxx · 27/06/2025 07:30

I know! When I saw all the school kids my initial thought was I hope they don’t ruin it (remembering myself at their age I think!). I agree with all your comments - I’ve seen a few ‘modern’ productions of great plays in the last year or so and this shows not only can it be done but done beautifully!

I agree go if you can (and take a bus load of school kids with you!).
