Tips for preventing or treating migraines

I get the signs before a migraine comes on where I feel exhausted, so tired I'm yawning and my voice sounds hoarse, I'm thirsty, irritable and I've come to recognise what it is. I tend to avoid triptans due to nausea so what helps you? I usually go and lie in a dark room but I've felt this way since yesterday so more than 24 hours and thankfully the migraine hasn't come on yet but just interested in any advice from others with experience.

I would try to work out what your triggers are and work on improving them.

Most people have more than 1 trigger and if you can make an improvement on all of them it will have a big overall impact.

Foods are rarely triggers, but often a symptom. The migraine starts before the pain and lots of people crave chocolate or cheese as a symptom, but assume they are triggers because the pain starts after they’ve been eaten.

One of my triggers was a bad cross bite. I’ve had braces on for 2 years to correct my bite and now wear a mouth guard which has had a huge impact. Neck tension was also a trigger for me and I see on osteopath regularly, and again, this has had a huge impact.

Hormones are also a trigger and my migraines have reduced in length and intensity but I still get a migraine around my period. I’m now working on eating to balance my hormones and improve my gut health, which I’ve researched can also be a migraine trigger.

I’ve had migraines since I was a child, and they are the best they’ve been since I started making a real effort to sort them out.

Food are definitely my trigger, I don't get them unless I've eaten certain foods by mistake.

I was reading about Vagus nerve stimulation helping the other day which tally’s in with things like cold water on face or wrists. I take a desolvable magnesium tablets plus lick a pinch of salt sometimes caffeine helps sometimes not. I’ve lost 3 stone thanks to mounjaro which has obviously reduced the amount of fat oestrogen in my body and seen a huge reduction in migraines which hit hard in my late 40s thanks to peri-menopause. I’m coming out of menopause now early 50s stopped taking sumatriptan just use syndol, massage, and hydration salts plus a dark room and 30mins meditation app to try go just “let go” all really help reduce to 48hr hangover feeling I got.

I’ve been getting vascular headaches, have recently started keto diet, and this has worked a treat for me. Magnesium supplements, ibruprofen, 500ml electrolyte water with 1/4 teaspoon of table salt and lay on the floor with my feet elevated for about 20 minutes. Magic!!!

I swear by syndol - has to be the yellow ones. Absolute godsend for treating the pain when nothing else works.

@isitmeamithedrama mine also is this syndol prescription? Does it get rid of the pain, do you get bad neck pain?

Syndol is over the counter but there are 2 types and you need the yellow ones - they really work

2 Anadin Extras with a strong cup of coffee. If that doesn't work (or it's too late in the day for caffeine) 2 pink Migralieve with coffee again.

Nothing I do necessarily makes it go away but at least makes it more bearable. Lie down in a dark room, eye mask, ear plugs, ice pack strapped to head (or they cool and soothe strips) eat as much as possible to help with the sicky feeling (usually things like crisps) as much water as possible, sumitriptan (Imigran) nasal spray, anti sickness tablets, painkillers (either co-codamol or aspirin), sleep as much as possible. Half of these things I can't do anymore now I'm a mum though 😭😂 I phoned NHS 24 once because I couldn't stand the pain any longer and was told to take 3 aspirins (900mg) and that actually did work!! I haven't really found my triggers apart from stress and not drinking enough water.

I take electrolytes daily (I run and cycle a lot and am pretty active, but I take them even on rest days).
Magnesium glycinate before bed, PLENTY of water.
Tiger balm for neck tension, aspirin, ibuprofen and paracetamol cocktail for days where I can’t stay at home, sumatriptan for days at home.

Masseter Botox has been life changing. If I could afford the whole head/neck, I would 100% try it.

Cannabis. Only when it’s completely debilitating, but genuinely the way I found out was by trying it in Amsterdam (because we were there and I had a migraine!). It went in 10mins.
