Why would M&S reduce a cook at home casserole that expires on 12th July to £2 today?

Their slow cooked heritage free range pork casserole boxes (sell by date 12th July) are all yellow stickered £2 in my local M&S today Confused. Usual price £12. I bought one! I've got this nagging doubt though - will there be something wrong with it? I would have thought they wouldn't be able to sell it at all if that was the case?

They're probably discontinuing the line and want to get rid of the stock to make way for something else.

its either discontinued and they want to clear the shelf for a new range or there’s been a packaging/pricing change I.e 500g for £12 now it’s 475g for £12

<runs to M&S>

Recently they seem to have started reducing everything to £2, £2.75 or £5 instead of the random amounts they used to like £1.08 and the most reductions seem to be rather pointless like something on the 3 for £8 deli offer being reduced to £2.75 so no cheaper per item

But yours might be an exception or a mistake and I think it's worth the risk for £2.

I think their stock keeping is still in a state of chaos after their computer attack, so they are probably desperately trying to make space in the warehouse and on the shelves for incoming stock.
Enjoy your meal, they wouldn't sell it if there was anything wrong with it.

I have just come back from M&S today lots of food (inc ready made meals and fresh meat) sell by dates today or within the next couple of days, nothing reduced.

I am not paying full price for food with sell by dates 25/26 and food with sell by 27/28 which will be wasted. Even potatoes in packets had dates of tomorrow noting else.

I mentioned it to one member of staff on the floor, a shrug and said its because there are no preservatives in the food so they have a shorter shelf life, and problems due to Brexit..... so I said does that include potatoes, grapes, cucumber and choux buns, which the last lot I bought had a sell by date of 5 days? No answer, came out with far far less than I would of gone in for.

Potatoes have their own inbuilt preservative. It is literally what makes a potato a potato.

DilemmaDelilah · 25/06/2025 17:28

I would have bought half a dozen!

TheBossOfMe · 25/06/2025 17:39

@OKLah I never pay any attention to sell by/use by dates on things like potatoes/fruit/veg. Just use your eyes.
