Cleaning used jigsaws

HI folks

Recently got into jigsaws and so far have only been doing new ones. Have seen some bargains in charity shops but wondered about how many hands they have been through.

Have tried to have a look at how to disinfect them but not found much.
Was thinking Dettol all in one spray or maybe some Dettol disinfectant spray onto a cloth and a gentle wipe ? or do most folks not bother

Ive never cleaned a puzzle from a charity shop in my life. Never saw the need. Surely anything you clean them with will make them wet and and the picture could potentially peel.
If you are concerned about germs I'd use an anti-bac hand gel before assembling the puzzle

DappledThings · 25/06/2025 11:54

No this has never crossed my mind. Just enjoy the jigsaw and don't worry about it.

You could use UV light disinfecter. I remember them being on sale around the pandemic to cleanse keys and cards etc

Just wash your hands with soap and warm water after. The germs on a jigsaw from the charity shop will be no different to the ones on a store door handle or a button in a lift.

tammienorrie · 25/06/2025 11:58

Ridiculous. What do you think you’re going to catch from a jigsaw.

Don’t overthink it. Enjoy the jigsaws and then donate them back.

i have bought tons of books second hand and really don’t give it even a seconds thought.

Iloveeverycat · 25/06/2025 13:57

Never given it a thought even the ones for my children

I assumed you were talking about old tools!

It has never occurred to me to clean a jigsaw puzzle - and to allay any fears you might have, germs only survive around 24 hours on cardboard, so you won't catch anything from a second-hand jigsaw.
