Is there a cheap way of printing just black print?

We have a HP printer which was cheap and works ok but is quite expensive as we are on a contract.
You get 10 free sheets a month but then pay 10p per sheet for any more.
This was fine when the kids were younger but now our kids are older it can cost quite a lot though they do send the ink cartridges for free.

We don't work in offices so can't print there.
Anyone found a cheaper solution?
Thanks

Get a cheap laser printer like the hp110w. Great quality for black only printing and so much better value for money than cartridges,
none of the faff either.

Used to print out loads of coloring sheets for DD.

A laser printer. Mine cost £50 and the toner (about £15) lasts about 2 years, and I print a lot of stuff.

Do you know what brand it is?
Thanks

Mine is a Samsung XpressM2026, but I bought it about 5 years ago and you can't get them new anymore, but there are 2nd hand ones about.

Get rid of the subscription, and just buy an off brand replacement cartridge when required.

Are you sure you can do that?

We have never had a subscription, but otherwise that is how we run a printer at home.

Definitely a laser printer. I have an Epson one I bought in 2020 (lockdown learning school sheet hell) and only needed to top up the ink once since and I print 10 or so sheets a week on average.

It sounds like you might be registered for HP instant ink? If so, you can change your subscription based on the number of pages you want to print each month.

Yeah, but it's still quite expensive

Get a printer that uses bottled ink. Tend to cost more to buy but if you are larger users it soon is cheaper long term

It depends on the printer. All new HP laser printers are dynamic sercurity enabled which means that you can only use original branded HP laser toners. The printers contain technology that may prevent cartridges with non-HP chips or circuitry from working now or in the future.

Other manufacturers are following in HP's footsteps.

One way of saving is to stop your subscription
(check your current ink level vs the next payment to try and avoid having to suddenly buy a new cartridge)

VFM per page goes towards laser printing rather than inkjets, but traditionally at the higher cost of toner cartridges and eventually the drum etc can mean you don’t print enough to save. Laser printer’s are now much cheaper. Note that new inkjets and new lasers may come with low capacity consumables

I have an hp150nw colour laser, which is mostly used for black printing and some colour. It costs a little more than £200, but black & white can be around £100

Decide if you want scanning facilities as this became almost standard to come with printers but the cheaper ones may not be able to do so (My colour laser doesn’t, so I would either need to use my phone and take a photo or use scanning via a different printer from elsewhere

Change your subscription. I think I get 50 pages for £2?! Any not used carry over. And then free ink cartridges. I think 100 pages is £3. It’s not expensive
