Selling a car (webuyanycar etc)

Hi everyone,

I'm buying a new car and have one to trade in, but offers from dealers have varied from £800 (acceptable) to £350 (pish). I know they will all just send it to auction rather than sell it themselves.

I got some quotes from the online dealers, and so far have:
"up to" £1350 (Motorway)
£750 (webuyanycar)
£1016 (carwow)

My car insurance renewal thinks it's worth £1150, though I don't know what they base that on.

If we go with the dealer that's offering us £350 I'd certainly look to sell it elsewhere. Now it's an old car (13 years) and good condition but does have a few flaws, so I'm aware that the above sites might knock us down if they come to look at it.

What has been your experience? Straightforward or troublesome? Did they take your car, reject it, knock the price down massively?

I really don't want to do a private sale, and looking online (Gumtree, Autotrader etc) it looks like there are hardly any private sales these days anyway.

We buy any car were great. I think they knocked iff £59 for a little dent but was easy and good value. The money was paid within an hour for an extra £20 if I remember correctly.

There’s loads of private sales these days. For a car of such little value, the only way I’d sell it is privately unless you don’t care, in which case just take the trade in for £350 as the easiest.

We used motorway and it was great. We had to send photos from all angles including any close ups of any scratches, and they just sent someone to collect. No quibbling about the price offered (which I’ve heard we buy any car are a nightmare for)

I would take it physically to whichever one is offering you the price you’d like to sell it for and get an actual quote. The online quote is for your car in near perfect condition. It won’t be in near perfect condition. The actual price they are willing to pay will be based on the in person assessment of the car at the appointment. Most then guarantee that price for a week or two while you make a decision. Webuyanycar paid us the price they quoted at the appointment, which was a few hundred less than the online quote because of body damage.

We buy any car will reduce their offer after 7 days, and then test even the thickness of the paint, and will knock you down. But it gets rid of the car so I used them.

Thanks everyone.

@mindutopia I hadn't realised they had offices, I thought they came out to you.

We’ve sold two cars via Motorway and I can highly recommend them. Well worth the effort if getting the photos right. You’ll get more than WBAC.

I sold via we buy any car and they were great. Didn’t knock any money off and gave me what they said they would. Only check was asked me to turn engine on and look at dash lights.

onehorserace · 24/06/2025 22:34

Motorway was the best deal for myself.

Not necessarily. I sold a car to WBAC for £2k more than Motorway’s highest offer.

I was offered £150 at those sites for my old car, I sold it privately for £600.
My partner was offered £1500 for his car and sold it privately for £5150. Both were sold this year.
It’s time consuming but I’d honestly recommend trying to sell it privately if you can.

I sold a car through we buy any car. It didn’t have an MOT and needed a lot of work to get one. Any car offered me £650 and I phoned them up to make sure they knew it was being sold without an MOT. All she asked was would it drive onto a tow truck or would it need winching on? They turned up when they said they would, didn’t look at the car at all, just took it and paid up! I was quite impressed with their service.

I just don't think I can face it! We might get more privately but not 3-4k more.
