What do you look forward to if you don't go on holiday?

That's it really. We are not going away in the school holidays as it is to expensive and I also have a new job and i can't take annual leave in August as all booked up.
I work hard and always look forward to going away in the six weeks so I feel abit fed up that we can't go. i need to think of some fun things so that I don't get jealous when everyone else is going away. Already decided to buy some new bedsheets and have a day out at Waterstones. Any other ideas?

Not being overdrawn. Sleeping in my own bed. Sound if birds. Being in my lovely home etc

I look forward to the change of seasons and different foliage/flowers in the garden.

Meeting up with friends for (overpriced) coffee😁

I'm quite boring really

I enjoy my actual life. We do go on holidays here and there, but definitely never booked in advance. I might decide a few weeks before and book something like a few days in Spain or a beach trip in the UK.

But I generally focus on doing things in life that I enjoy: hobbies, books, doing things as a family, career progression, setting goals (like training for something or accomplishing something big), learning new things.

I love this.

I enjoy my day-to-day life as well as go on (lots of) holidays, and I don’t relate to the idea that travel is all about escaping the daily grind. It’s a change of scenery for me and I love exploring new places.

But I totally agree that it’s important to make everyday life as fun and fulfilling as possible.

I would love to make all my trips spontaneous, but I love going to festivals and ticket sales are getting earlier and earlier so I have to plan trips in advance. A festival I had my eye on for mid-May 2026 sold out… in late May 2025 🤦‍♀️

Now dc is older, sometimes we get up at dawn at the weekend, drive to the coast, walk on the beach, breakfast overlooking the harbour, and leave just as it's getting busy.
Or book a regular swim at the pool, or cycle quiet lanes to a pub for lunch or supper, or take a picnic up the local beacon hill on a fine day.

We have two sun loungers (a really good investment), rugs, quoits and hoopla for the garden and a box of Magnums in the freezer, so ds & friend generally found lazing/chatting outside if it's warm.

DH and I have taken the first week of the school holidays off together. We are going to treat it as a holiday and do things we would usually do when we are away and then have booked a night away at the end of the week.

we are going to have buffet style continental breakfasts in the morning, meals out in local places in the evenings, the pool is out for the DC’s to play in, we will all have new books to read and will spend a few days visiting local attractions we don’t usually think about visiting.

We are really looking to our ‘staycation’.

We rarely go on holiday. We go to
america to see family every three years but otherwise we do a ton of day trips or one overnight. I think you have to try to make tiny changes in your life so you don’t have to rely on a holiday to get through or look forward to.
An overnight at a weekend perhaps somewhere lovely? Or some planned days out.
