Booked a holiday, but the kids don't cope with busy places
Can anyone recommend more quiet places ,away from tourist areas
Penzance and around there ,maybe little villages or quiet towns
I know it's asking a lot during the summer holidays
But school terms mean its this or no holiday

Penzance is not that bad in summer. Have a potter down Chapel Street - lots of beautiful old buildings and pubs like the Admiral Benbow and the Turks Head.

Book a trip to the Jubilee Pool in Pz. If you want the warm pool you definitely need to book in advance, but it's not crazy busy. I spent my childhood in the pool there.

Go for a nice walk around Botallack mines, not a known tourist spot really, but it's beautiful on a sunny day.

Avoid St Ives like the plague if you don't like busy.

I used to live in st Ives and go to college in Penzance
But I dont know the areas around ,as was never taken anywhere

We are actually at the point where we could move ,so part of the holiday is to see if there is anywhere we like enough to move to .
But as I said we don't like busy ,and I only know Penzance from going to college and st Ives from going to the secondary school.
It's funny how it pulls you back ..

Thankyou ,yes we've been to st just ,and been up cape Cornwall, not been to lands end as assumed its to busy for us

Lands End is a dump, parking is pricy and it'll be very very busy. Don't pay for the "experiences", it's absolutely not worth it.

However, if you drive out to Sennen, park down near the beach and walk the costal path round the cliffs and you can get into LE that way. That's not busy and you still get to see things.

Would recommend looking at what's on at The Minack Theatre, it's amazing.

Head out to St Just, have a potter about and lunch in The Star Inn. Lots of nice places around there to drive to for the day.

Lamorna Cove is lovely. Pop up to the Merry Maidens stone circle. There's also Carn Runy - prehistoric ruins of a village - which isn't far away. Or go up to Chysauster.

St Michael's Mount - walk over from Pz and avoid the crazy car parking. Walk to the Mount, but check tide times and whether the village is open or if you need a ticket to access it. It'll be busy but lots of space on Marazion and Long Rock beaches.

There's the butterfly house at St Hillary. Paradise Park in Hayle. The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek.

Trevaskis Farm at Hayle for the insane cakes.

Coverack is a bit of a drive but it's a pretty little place.

Have a lovely time.

RareGoalsVerge · 23/06/2025 10:42

Have a day trip to see the stones at Mên-an-Tol and the Lanyon Quoit, and finish up with a cream tea at Rosemergy - you may need to book to be sure of a garden table at Rosemergy but none of these will be crowded.

Kernowgal · 23/06/2025 10:44

I wouldn’t move to Cornwall if you don’t like busy places. Granted, it only the holidays when it’s really ridiculous but it’s getting more popular out of season. The traffic on the A30 around Hayle can be awful.

That said, if you avoid the coastal villages it’s quite easy to avoid the worst crowds. Also worth getting up and about early if possible. The Penwith moors are beautiful with lots of good walks. Lands End is absolutely shite, don’t waste your money. Echo a PP about Redruth - it’s a great town and the new Buttermarket has some good eating options.

In PZ I’d just walk along the seafront to Newlyn and back. It’s an easy walk/cycle over to Marazion too.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/06/2025 10:50

If you ho over to the Mount, don't go in the house - it will be packed and it's really tight inside so you're shoulder to shoulder with everyone. The gardens are lovely though, and worth a visit.

There's a restaurant there that I had a lovely meal at, you can walk along the beach to it from the Mount towards Longrock https://hotelpenzance.com/restaurants/the-surf-club

The Surf Club Restaurant | The Hotel Penzance Collection

At the Surf Club, we bring the coastal magic indoors with delicious food, refreshing drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for soaking it all in.

Actually if you are thinking of moving, don't like busy and are feeling drawn back to Cornwall I think you've made the perfect choice coming in the height of summer on holiday!

You can see it and explore while it's at its busiest and decide if it's for you, clear in the knowledge it won't get any worse in the other months!

Movinghouseatlast · 23/06/2025 11:29

Have a look at Cape Cornwall. It's quieter than the more 'honey pot' places. St Just is a nice village, and then there are liovely coves.

You can walk from Penzance to Marazion/ St Michael's Mount. If you book the Mount in advance it doesn't feel too busy.

Happyhippy99 · 23/06/2025 11:46

Boscawen Stone Circle and Merry Maidens are beautiful for walking & serene. They are easily accessible from Penzance. St Buryan has lots of beautiful walks in the surrounding area. Walk down to Ped’n’vounder beach for a Caribbean experience. I can guarantee there will be less than 10 people on the whole beach. It’s stunning. I’d give Lands End a wide berth, but you can park there & walk along the cliff path to Nanjizal beach which is breathtaking and very quiet.
The village of Paul has an interesting church and footpaths to Mousehole.
St Just has some lovely pubs and the Lamorna valley is great for shady wooded walks. We come to this part of Cornwall every year and always find quiet places even in August. Have a lovely holiday.

My parents split up ,I lived with my dad and went to school in st Ives
So I missed the busy periods of summer and tourists, because I was staying with my mum in the holidays.
Hence me not really knowing the area ,or how busy it gets summer holidays.
We have been before, but generally in October half term .
So yes this will a first ,to see if we can cope with the busy

There is a vegan cafe in mousel ,but we have never managed to go due to no parking .
I doubt we will manage it This time sadly either

We always head for long rock beach early in the morning as it lets us take our dogs on .
It will feel weird being there when it's warm and not all wrapped up in coats

Everywhere in Cornwall will be busy in August but… not so much in the early morning.
So rise early and be at the attraction / town as soon as it’s open. Generally, holiday folk tend to enjoy lazy mornings and places don’t really get packed until 11-12.
Do the train to St Ives (because it’s stunning) but go at 8am. Have a wander round the town and get breakfast in a cafe (or take a breakfast picnic to the beach). The crowds won’t arrive until a little later.
There are plenty of massive beaches in the area where you won’t feel crammed in. Gwithian / Hayle / Carbis Bay etc (check tide times and go in low tide as they’re even bigger then).

I don't know how old you are but you may find a huge change.

I live in a different part of Cornwall but it's gone from living in a community that attracts tourists to like living in a Disney form of Cornwall. Where you can eat anything from a takeout sandwich to a Michelin star meal but don't have residential neighbours anymore (with kids at the local school) or places to buy affordable regular shopping. Every time I go out down town it feels like being on holiday which is sort of nice and sort of not!

As a child we always visited the beaches of a late afternoon/early evening when it was quieter. That was back in the days when it felt we had long sunny summers!

Leo800 · 23/06/2025 11:57

The Sculpture Park near Penzance is lovely & quite spread out so it doesn’t get too busy. We had a lovely lunch there. Go up to Bodmin Moor for walks or a mooch around the villages. Davidstow is interesting. It may be a bit far, although you could go on the way down or back.

Navigatinglife100 · 23/06/2025 11:58

I was thinking Bodmin Moor and living at Minions! That'll be quiet! But it's a long way from Penzance...

I've not heard of the sculpture park ,sounds interesting

Edited

When I lived in st Ives there was no where to buy clothes at all , nothing catered for the locals, the shops were fudge and souvenirs or the odd bag shop and nothing teenage me could buy .I'm not expecting that to be different . people do seem to move away for jobs ,as most are seasonal

Yes you won't notice so much of a difference. Actually you may find the quality of retail and hospitality has improved from.then - more art, quality gifts, and decent eating and drinking establishments. Driven by the demands of the ££££ holiday and second home crowd.

I'm clearly getting on a bit as I go back 50 years if I think of my childhood!

Puglicks · 23/06/2025 12:25

I'm 52 ,so it was a very long time ago I lived there
