What are civillian MOD roles like?

I’ve seen an MOD post I’m interested in. It’s to do with supporting military families and would mean relocating to live near a military base. I’ve worked in the public sector but I’ve no experience whatsoever of any of the services and don’t know anyone who has either.
If anyone here has experience I’d love to know what the MOD like as an employer and if the culture or expectations are much different from other workplaces?

There might be more gradism than you’re used to. Like any large workplace there are pockets that are toxic and pockets that are wonderful places to work. It is behind a lot of other public sector workplaces in terms of E&D. There’s good L&D opportunities and plenty of shadowing, mentoring opportunities. Lots of networks to join, chances to move around and go on secondment etc.

If joining the civil is of particular interest to you, once you are in it’s fairly easy to move about between departments.

I would also do your best to find out more about the atmosphere at the particular base. What the facilities are like, what the big issues are, what the relationship is like between the military and locals etc.

Many moons ago, my husband had one of those roles, and while he enjoyed the work, he said the salary was outrageous.

Thank you, do you know how I can go about finding out more information about the specific base? I don’t know anybody I can ask, and google isn’t helping me much.

Thanks, the one I’m looking at seems to have a reasonable salary at first glance, but it all rather depends on the expectations for the role, doesn’t it. What did he enjoy about it? What was the work-life balance like? Thanks

No, I guess you could have a chat with the Line Manager and or try and find out at interview. I guess you can’t expect that they will be completely candid. But hopefully you’ll get a flavour for the base and maybe some other contacts to talk to.
