Forgot that it was a non uniform day today

So today at my son's school it was a non-uniform day and everyone is allowed to come into school in their sports clothes.

I completely forgot and my son was the only one who turned up in his uniform.

He's in reception.

My husband is on the way to the school at the moment to drop off some sports clothes.

I feel really bad. :(

Can anyone assure me that I'm not the only one and that this happens to other parents, too?

Definitely not the only one, I’ve done this a couple of times in primary school before! Luckily have a pretty nonchalant boy who wasn’t that bothered one time. And then another time, I remembered on the way to school (passing other people not wearing uniform) and quickly diverted past a supermarket to buy the cheapest shorts and T-shirt I could find! He had been needing some new clothes anyway.

I missed the note about crazy hair day. Thankfully one of the fellow reception parents had a spare bright red wig but it was awful when I realised. I also missed Christmas jumper day once - you are not alone.

Our school newsletter sometimes puts things in the calendar but mentions it nowhere else. I now scrutinise it carefully!

Yeah I’ve forgot in the past for my child (and forgot when I was a pupil myself at high school).

This is the ONLY reason I stayed in the stupid toxic class WhatsApp group!!

stayathomer · 20/06/2025 09:17

there will be others op, and if it’s the weather we’re having without his jumper it won’t be noticeable at all. Hopefully he won’t even think about it with all the madness this time of year brings! We used to bring school uniform in case we got it wrong the other way!

Cruiser123 · 20/06/2025 09:34

My husband has dropped off his sport clothes at school now.

Just feel a bit sad for my little man, we all know how embarrassing is to turn up in the wrong outfit to the party.

Honestly don’t worry and in reception other children are less likely to notice/he’s less likely to be bothered. We’ve all forgotten something along the way

mrsh2025 · 20/06/2025 10:18

I’ve forgotten many a time thank god we didn’t live far from school…. If it makes you feel better had big row with teenagers at one point for trying to bunk off made them get dressed and go to school. Hour later call from head as it was a teacher training day

GrandTheftWalrus · 20/06/2025 10:19

Ive forgotten to do non uniform day as well but she didn't mind. Also forgot crazy hair day. It happens. Especially as I have one in nursery and one in school and they do different things on different days.

AuntMarch · 20/06/2025 10:20

I work in a year 1 class. We had non uniform for an event yesterday. Two forgot.
There's been at least one every time! Always see a few from other years/classes too. Don't worry about it :)

Icanttakethisanymore · 20/06/2025 10:21

It's no biggie in reception I don't think. Slightly older children might take the piss but I doubt the receptions kids had much to say about it and if they did I doubt it would have been unkind.

MyIvyGrows · 20/06/2025 10:23

It can be really difficult to keep track of - our school
communicates things like this on several different channels, some of which I don’t have access to 😫 and tbh it’s the only reason I check in with the WhatsApp group as someone in there always knows what is going on.

Michele09 · 20/06/2025 10:23

My dd was always terrified on non uniform day she'd got the wrong day. She needed lots of reassurance like showing her the email with the date. She was desperate to see someone else en route in non uniform.

TeenToTwenties · 20/06/2025 10:25

I did it once.
The daft thing was it was a non uniform day to bring in something for the summer fair, and I was on the PTA, and I even went in early to collect the items in!

mondaytosunday · 20/06/2025 10:26

Goodness this happens all the time! I wouldn’t make a special trip.

SoftPillow · 20/06/2025 10:27

It’s much worse the other way around, we had a boy turn up in full faint paint and costume fancy dress for a charity day, on entirely the wrong day 😁

Don’t worry, we’ve all done something similar and luckily your DH was able to bring something in. No harm done, he won’t even mention later I bet

onwardandupwards · 20/06/2025 10:30

I once took mine to school on a teacher training day feeling really proud we were early 😂

EleventyThree · 20/06/2025 10:32

It's impossible to keep up and you're definitely not alone! It gets easier when they're a little older and they can start remembering this kind of stuff for themselves 😀

Comedycook · 20/06/2025 10:34

Happened to me once... luckily the school was opposite a huge Sainsbury's with a clothing section so I dashed in and grabbed some joggers and a t shirt!

Oh and they're teens now and we still laugh about it so I don't think there's been any lasting damage!

mummysmagicmedicine · 20/06/2025 10:35

We’ve all been there my lovely so please don’t be too hard on yourself x

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 20/06/2025 10:36

Been there. He'll just be delighted that someone's turned up with clothes!

Sprogonthetyne · 20/06/2025 10:37

He won't be the only on. At my kids school (also reception) they get them to pick something off the dressing up rail, which to lots of 5yo is a step up from normal cloths anyway.

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 20/06/2025 10:54

I really wouldn't worry - it got sorted very quickly. He will have forgotten about it by break time.

spiderlight · 20/06/2025 10:54

There's always at least one in every year, don't worry! I still remember walking halfway to school with my son at the same age thinking 'Gosh, it's quiet....are we early? Are we late?' before he piped up 'Mummy, what's an insect day?'

countingthedays945 · 20/06/2025 11:00

I was only just having a laugh yesterday with my 19 year old daughter that I used to do the same and she said once she persuaded her friend to lend her his sports top and shorts to blend in! As I say we had a good laugh about my primary school parenting and times where I had cocked up!
