Just curious after a chat with some friends today.
How often do you let your kids get muddy? or just get messy for fun in general?

She comes home filthy most days from Reception as she used to from Nursery. Not necessarily ‘muddy’ but sometimes - it’s dry at the moment but still comes back covered in grass stains and soil. We don’t really do any gardening as a family, and she has a ‘mud kitchen’ in the garden but honestly mostly just plays with water in it, sometimes sand. The only time it bothers me is when she’s clearly been drawing over herself in whiteboard pen which do not come out of clothes no matter how washable they claim to be.

She was paddling in a stream recently and got caked in mud. And on holiday the other week the heavens opened whilst we were in some lovely gardens, we took shelter in the (open side but under a roof) cafe but DD wanted to just run around in the rain, stand under the fountains fully clothed (not wearing a coat at any point) and roll around on the grass with a friend she’d acquired from somewhere. All of which happy to let her get on with as I had a change of clothes for her with me, plus always keep one of those huge muslins left over from baby days in the bag which I use as a towel/ picnic blanket/ whatever. So could just clean her up and put her in dry things in the loos after - necessary as we were going for dinner afterwards.

We used to go to a messy play/ arty baby and toddler group which I liked as I found I wasn’t really keen on the fully messy stuff at home. Once when she was 2 she stripped herself down to her pants and just painted herself entirely bright red. I really wanted to stop her but I managed to just let her enjoy, and at least I’ve got the pictures for her 18th!

Id love to say I’m entirely at peace with it, but it does stress me out a bit inside, I just try not to let it show! My husband in the other hand is terrible, it really bothers him. We’ve had a number of conversations about how he needs to rein it in a bit and not pass his hang ups onto her.

Never

Is that because for some reason you actively forbid it or is it not something your child ever wants to do?

I wasn't aware that it was something to be counted or rationed, my children are older now but when they were younger who knows, it happened when it happened

My kids were always filthy, I have horses so they spent hours outdoors everyday, they would come home everyday covered in muck with hay stuck in their hair. Dirt is good, getting messy is fun, mine are older teens now and they are never sick. I did used to shower them at the end of everyday (too dirty for baths it would have been like mud soup), I was very lucky they had 20 acres of safe space to enjoy and they have very fond memories of it.

We’re surrounded by fields with public access, tractors driving through them all weathers, mines all grown up now but when younger we always walked the dog regardless of weather and every time they came home filthy and soaking wet!
Now I’m encouraging my grandchildren to go get muddy and wet 🤣🤣

All of mine spend more time out than in, beach, forest , football or whatever. I could struggle to answer "When do your children look clean" Baths/showers everyday here. I used to work in a nursery and one parent sent their child in all white clothes and kid (as in baby goat) shoes everyday. Strict instructions not to let her paint, play in the sand or go outside. Poor little girl.

This is awful

Our nursery used to apologise for DS as he would get absolutely covered in paint, mud and I dread to think what else. I was like you do realise the first t-shirt had a hole in it and the knees on the trousers were threadbare? The messier the better they were told. In the winter my kids wear full waterproofs and wellies. Currently we have a niche selection of big sticks and stones in the garden. They were making their own 'campfires' and mud pies. I tend to leave them to it knowing the youngest also goes to forest school once a week

I'd love to but it rarely happens.

Danikm151 · 21/06/2025 21:39

A messy kid is happy kid!

whenever he wants to!

itsturtlesallthewaydown · 21/06/2025 22:12

Where are you all finding mud, it's dry as a bone outside!

But in in winter I wrap them in waterproof dungarees and coats and wellies and they can do what they like!

I've never thought about "letting" them get muddy..

Pretty much whenever they want to (unless we’re going out and don’t have time for another wash!)
We went to a big park yesterday that had lots of mud that was like sand in the heat yesterday, they spent ages sliding fine the mounds! They had a great time and I just chucked them in the shower before bed.
