Washer dryer

My washing machine has just turned up.its toes. Thinking of replacing with a washer dryer, but mindful that condensing dryers don't get the washing bone dry and we don't have an airing cupboard.

Any thoughts

Depends on the setting and load size, they do dry properly, or you can air clothes briefly on a clothes horse

I think I'm too lazy for that if I'm honest. I can't line dry due to hay-fever, very frustrating.

There nowhere near as good as 2 separate machines
Have limitations on drying efficiency and load size but ultimately better than nothing

We’ve had 2 and hated them both. The clothes would be steaming hot but damp even after 3 hours of drying. We gave up and got a separate dryer.

How do you dry them at the moment?

MyLov · 19/06/2025 22:23

I have a condenser. It dries things completely. Not sure what you mean by that. Maybe it’s different for washer dryers but can’t see the point of a tumble dryer that only partly dries things?!?

PickAChew · 19/06/2025 22:28

We had washer dryers for a few years (yes, plural. They break). Useful for the odd load that needs tumble drying but the dryer can only dry a half load and they do get them dry when new but also get very hot.

You can put a standard condenser or heat pump dryer anywhere with adequate airflow if you're concerned about kitchen or futility room space. Ours is in the dining area.

I had one, it was shit. Only coped with half a load to dry (and didn’t do it awfully well, like others it still ended up damp) so i had to take half out and hang it up anyway or only wash half a load.

Went back to 2 separate machines, both extra large and hang outside when I can. Tbh the condenser dryer isn’t as good as my old regular tumble dryer but its miles better than the combi one.

We have separate but as I might need a new machine I was considering a washer dryer to save space.

One last fix to try on the old one but I think I'll stick to separates

I’ve had a washer dryer in the past and never bothered with the ‘dryer’ function, as it just seemed to steam the clothes and never got them dry. The clothes also smelled weird after being steamed.

I did without a dryer for years due to space, then recently got a heat pump dryer and I’m not ashamed to say it’s changed my life!!!! Clothes are bone dry and no shrinkage. Truly wonderful machine!

I don’t know if washer/dryers have massively improved over the last few years (since I had one) , but I wouldn’t consider one again personally…

For what it’s worth, I highly recommend considering a heat pump dryer vs a condenser. I’ve had both and heat pump wins hands down.

they are a bit more expensive to buy, but cheaper to run and much more gentle on clothes.

Do you need to vent the heat pumps? I would definitely consider one if that is the case

No. They work similar to a condenser dryer from a user POV. They're also slower but cooler.

Ricoletti · 20/06/2025 12:35

My heat pump dryer is stood next to washer in utility room, in same place as condenser one way. It works just the same as old condenser one in terms of what I need to do to it… I just empty the tank of water / filter etc after use.

i think it’s different because it recycles the heat generated , making it use less power.

it’s a bit slower to dry, but still very efficient and obviously way quicker than clothes horse! I find it doesn’t shrink clothes like the condenser one did, likely because it’s not as hot.
