Do you ever think of your old teachers?

I was mashing potatoes for a fish pie and I suddenly remembered back to my Home Economics class. We (friend and I) were mashing potatoes for the top of a shepherds pie. The teacher picked us to demonstrate how to pipe mash on top of the pie. Except our mash was lumpy and kept blocking the icing nozzle thingy 😀. She was less than impressed. Anyway, she was a nice lady and I hope she's doing well now. She left the school at some point and moved away. I only did HE for a year, so that class was over 40 years ago. Isn't it funny how teachers (and insignificant little incidents) stick in your mind.

I frequently see my English teacher, he was a wonderful teacher and a really lovely man. He is only about 15 years older than me but of course I thought he was middle aged when I was a teenager.

I sometimes think of a teacher that I had in primary school, for 3 out of the 4 years I was in the juniors (early 1970s). She was absolutely shit hot on spelling and times tables. We had a spelling test every afternoon, and a times tables test 3 times a week. I think it is down to her that I am good at spelling and times tables. My DD and DGD are always amazed at how they can fire any times table at me and I know the answer instantly. I don't think they teach it in schools nowadays.

Yes. There was another thread where someone mentioned doing Scripture and it made me think of a teacher I had at age 6-7. She was a really amazing teacher as I remember so much about what I learned that year. Books she read to us, songs we sang. Projects we did on Holland, the Dinosaurs, London Zoo. Poetry, she walked us to a local library which no other teacher did, took us on trips. I remember creative writing we did.
It was in the 70s and I tried to look her up as I remember her saying where she lived. She was very religious and I think I saw her name mentioned on a website about a local church, but from old records.

I have fleeting thoughts about a few, both good and bad!

No never, I don't even particularly remember many of my teachers

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/01/2026 19:19

I still occasionally see/hear of some of my old primary school teachers. They also taught my mother and my uncle, and were friends with my grandparents! Most lived and taught locally.

Secondary school... not so much. There are only two that I'd really like to say thank-you to, for truly being able to look past my appearance and treat me like a human being, rather than the freak that the rest of the world saw. I've seen one since, but not the other. I just hope that she is happy, because she came across as being a good, kind person at a time when I was really struggling.

Yes.

Good teacher - English A level teacher who really helped me appreciate literature.

Bad teacher - history A level teacher who bullied me mercilessly and damaged my.self confidence so badly I still remember it 40 years later.

We have a former pupils wall on Facebook and its sad that so many teachers have passed away, but then again even the younger ones would be in their 70s

I sent my bf a picture of my rolypoly dough the other week with a tagline of ‘It’s not a map of Africa’ which our Home Ec teacher said to me once when I’d attempted to roll pastry to cover a round plate. We say it to each other frequently along with ‘Watch my hands, this is a demonstration’ as she put her hands behind her back 🤣

I loved one of my A level French teachers and my A level English teacher, they were both very inspiring. I’ve ended up teach both, weirdly.

WhatIsTheCharge · 07/01/2026 20:47

Yes, I’m still in contact with one of them. He was the only person who had the wherewithal to notice there was something very wrong going on in my life and did all the things a safe adult should do to protect a vulnerable teenager. Without him, I’d probably have gone down a very very different road. He’s a wonderful man, even now, 17 years later, he still keeps in contact every now and again.

CosmicTea · 07/01/2026 20:49

No, I don't think of them. I found school dreadful and all the teachers looked like they wanted to be anywhere else except in school. They either seemed to be going through the motions, or were unnecessarily scary. There was one good teacher at our school (apparently) but she never taught my class.

There are some wonderful posts on here - @WhatIsTheCharge@TheeNotoriousPIG particularly made me well up. Thank you for sharing so much.
My own best was the teacher who realised that my pain was actually a major health condition & got me help. I wouldn’t be able to walk without their input.
My worst was the so-called Careers teacher who told me that I “would never amount to much”. I take pleasure from the fact that I absolutely bloody did amount to quite a lot!!
(I appear to have posted already on here but can’t find it… if the answers are different then I guess it confirms that memories are variable!)
