Would you apply for a job 20k extra PA but going from compressed 4 day week WFH to full office based work 5 days

A job has come up that looks OK (not amazing but OK) but it’s 20k extra to what I earn now. However currently I do 5 days compressed in 4 and I can pick and chose whether I WFH or in the office, so I do a bit of both depending on how social I feel and deliveries etc. The new job has to work in the office 4 days a week (office a 20 mins drive away).

Im a bit fed up with my current job, little prospects to progress but it’s pretty much zero stress and a lovely team. I can do it my sleep so when I finish I’m completely present for my high school age kids.

I just don’t know what to do. In many ways I’ve got a great life work balance but I was once really ambitious and having kids has sapped that out of me. This would be more senior. I can’t help have a voice that tells me they wouldn’t even consider me as I feel a bit of a wash up.

But then no harm in applying and if I don’t get an interview I don’t get an interview.

Or I just carry on happy(ish) as I am.

Garrrr someone help!!!!

It’s 40% on income earned above £60k, so in this case 5k. It’s not 40% on all of your income once you hit 60k.

Higher rate
£50,271 to £125,140
40%

From Government UK website.

I would definitely do it for the extra money unless it made childcare completely unmanageable but I also enjoy the social aspect and work/home life separation of being in the office.

DifferentChoicesTooLate · 19/06/2025 16:18

No childcare issues, a 15 year old and a 12 going on 80 year old (very sensible and risk adverse).

Aww love that. Definitely go for it!

Crushed23 · 19/06/2025 16:35

Working in the office 4 days a week is what I do now and it’s perfectly fine. If the job is a better fit AND a £20k pay rise then you should absolutely apply. It’s a no brainer.

DifferentChoicesTooLate · 19/06/2025 16:36

I have followed @tigerlily9 advice and emailed the hiring manager and asked some questions.

Thank you all for the support.

I realise how mad I sound! 🤣

Having children and taking time from career progression really messes with your mind!

I need to be more man like!!!

Go for it @DifferentChoicesTooLate I regret not taking a higher paid job because of wfh and I am so bored and deflated in my current job! Especially as your kids are secondary school level you should junp at it! And you’re only 20 mins away, if it was a big commute it would be different but it’s 20 mins!

SpottedDonkey · 19/06/2025 16:59

I wouldn’t apply. But I’m old enough and financially comfortable enough that an extra £20k gross wouldn’t make a massive difference to my life. However, going from working 4 days per week to 5 would mean losing 47 days off a year, and that most certainly would.

coxesorangepippin · 19/06/2025 17:00

Absolutely no way

Wfh is worth at least 20k on a salary

DifferentChoicesTooLate · 19/06/2025 17:17

OK update and thanks to @tigerlily9!

Just spoken to the hiring manager and I’m not going to apply. The job sounds a bloody nightmare!

BUT….she strongly hinted about waiting to see what will come up and something else might come up (and then said you didn’t hear it from me). We had a lovely chat and I was able to present myself a bit, which is always important!

So the moral of the story is don’t be scared to show interest in a job even if it’s not a right fit as it can lead to different conversations.

Feel a lot better now.

MN is bloody amazing at times 🤣

Also the diverse answers shows that perhaps my indecision was well placed as I got a pretty much equal Yes/no response!

Apply, 20k is a lot (to me) and a 20min commute is short.
If you get an interview then you can seriously think about it and don't need to decide unless you're offered it.
But based on what you said I definitely would.
Only proviso would be if you had caring responsibilities that would make it almost impossible.

Dutchhouse14 · 19/06/2025 18:11

Oh just saw your update, nevermind!

ChickenChow · 01/09/2025 10:08

Do it and retire earlier.
