Are there any migraine sufferers here to help?

For six months I’ve been getting regular headaches, often daily. Sometimes it’s quite sore but relieved by paracetamol. Sometimes it’s at the front, sometimes it’s behind my left eye, sometimes it’s in the left lobe. It often feels like a pressure in my head.

I also get temporary vision changes (slightly blurry vision) and tingling in the left side of my face. I have never previously suffered with migraines.

The GP prescribed some migraine medication which I’m supposed to take when I feel a headache starting, but I don’t actually know when that is. Sometimes I wake up with headaches.

Lately, I’ve been getting what I assume (thanks to Google) to be an aura, but with no headache.

When it happens, I get a feeling of pressure or lightheadedness in my head. I feel rather strange or not quite with it. It’s like everything is a bit surreal. I also get fatigued quickly and tingling in my face, but no (or very little) headache.

I’ve also noticed I’m getting “blips” of confusion, not all of the time but enough to wonder if I’m going mad. For a couple of seconds, maybe upon waking, I’ll not recognise my room and it takes a second for everything to be recognised. Or I’ll have to double check if something is “real”. DH jokingly said something the other night and for a split second I thought he was serious (but it was something so ridiculous it would be impossible to be serious). This has happened twice in the last month where I have to question my perception of something.

Other times, I’ll ask something of DH and when he says he’s just told me the same answer, I’ve no recollection of asking him. I usually put this down to being rushed and not taking notice of what I’m doing.

Does this sound typical for migraines?

@MyGrainAgain persistent headaches are not to be ignored.

Your symptoms are escalating.

Is there any reason you are reluctant to go to the doctor?

SumUp · 21/06/2025 15:09

Definitely go back to your GP and ask for a neurology referral to rule out other conditions and get a CT scan. As a migraine sufferer, please believe that you are not wasting their time, it seems as though your symptoms are escalating.

My epilepsy started with aura type feelings and migraines. These became complex partial seizures.
I absolutely do not want to scare you, but I would not trust that a GP can judge what type of aura is being experienced. I would personally think that pins and needles, weakness, lightheaded, feeling that things are not real, are quite serious symptoms and the definite cause needs to be determined, not just a guess that it's migraine.

Neurology wait are very long in some parts of the country. If you have the funds it would be worth looking into the Neurology Consultants at your nearest hospital and checking if they run private clinics.

OP you should def go to the GP but here is also something simple to try

Buy a cheap foam roller off Amazon, like you'd see in the gym or physio's office. A really knobbly "tractor tyre" one. Should be about a tenner.

Then foam roller the absolute hell out of your back, esp the mid (thoracic) spine, under your armpits and top of spine.

....I have many of your symptoms and they are largely down to bad tension in my back. Tight traps/ lats can "pull" on smaller muscles in the upper back and neck (around cervical vertebrae) which in turn refer around the front of the skull.

Untreated, I get bad pressure all over my face / eyes, cannot focus on things, vomiting, cannot keep eyes open. If I do the above it almost entirely prevents them.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 21/06/2025 15:34

It hurts like hell, be warned! But after, I get a "light" feeling like warm water running through my back and neck and the feelings of pressure and tingling disappear.

I’ve changed my mind- go to the GP this week

MyGrainAgain · 22/06/2025 09:17

Thanks all. I have an unrelated GP appointment this week but I think I’ll change the “problem” to this (it’s a strict one problem only policy at my surgery).

The prickling feeling in my hands and feet is subsiding after 3 days but I seem to have been left with a mild weakness in one of my arms and some mild blurry vision in one of my eyes. My arm also feels quite sore, as if I’ve been exercising. It feels a shaky and buzzy after I’ve used it to lift something and then the pin pricks start again.

I woke up around 2am with a mild dull headache but nothing like I’d expect a migraine to be like. I’ve never experienced a severe migraine type headache.

It’s all rather odd as I have never suffered with migraines. The symptoms are so vague, I expect I’ll just be told to drink more water and try a new medication .

(Sorry if this sounds rude )

But are you nuts?

This :

I seem to have been left with a mild weakness in one of my arms and some mild blurry vision in one of my eyes.

is an A&E NOW symptom

Your GP is not going to be faffing around with meds if you are loosing the use of body parts.
Go to a A&E hospital which can scan your brain ASAP.

MyGrainAgain · 23/06/2025 12:17

@AnSolas Your post made me chuckle (in a nice way). I didn’t go to A&E as I don’t feel my symptoms urgent.

Oddly enough, now that the temperature has dropped, my symptoms have improved and almost disappeared. I know migraines can be induced by heat. I’ve never experienced them before so I’m still learning about triggers and what they feel like.

Glad to create a giggle😀 moment.

I will be very suprised if your doc is not asking for a scan to be carried out.
Transient ischemic attack / TIA or mini strokes recover in the way you describe. And they can lead to full strokes so you do need further investigations to rule that out.
