50th birthday gift

There is a 50th birthday coming up and I’m really stumped for a gift idea. I’d like to buy something that is memorable, either a physical thing or experience.

The woman in question does not need anything (no jewellery, clothing, art, etc) and classic/popular experience gifts that you get on websites such as Virgin (such as hot air balloon, afternoon tea, etc) have already been done.

I’d like an experience gift that might be useful or beneficial in some way, I just can’t think of what that might be!

Desperate for inspiration! What have you got someone for their 50th? What did you get given for your 50th? (or other big birthdays) What has been your most memorable gift?

I was gifted a cookery class with a fairly well known chef. TBH I was dreading it, but it was really useful (and I'm not a bad cook) and fun. It culminated with a meal at his restaurant that evening, accompanied by the person who arranged the experience. It was/is a very happy memory.

We gave a friend a 6 month subscription for flowers
If she has a favourite animal - a zoo experience
Private tour of something (castle, football stadium museum...)
Workshop (cooking, glassblowing, blacksmith, woodwork)

Pottery class - there’s loads about where you can either just paint a pot/object or others where you can make it and cold t after it’s been fired. Nice to go together as it’s a lovely memory.

Theatre tickets? Either for a specific show or vouchers.

Boat trip on your local river? combined with a posh picnic!

Zoo trip with a feed an animal experience.

The bespoke subscription to Willoughby book club. The friend I bought it for has not stopped raving about it.

You sign up and they send a lovely tin with instructions. The receiver then submits their details along with info about the kinds of books they like to read. They can even be cook books/non fiction.

Then every month a beautifully wrapped book arrives. If they're coming too often it's easy to change the frequency and they will immediately replace any books you have already read, free of charge. They will always fit through the letterbox so no missed deliveries.

My friend says he wants by the door on the day the book is due! He's amazed at how right they have his style and has read books he'd never have known about. He's a bit obsessed, in a good way. Best gift I've ever bought.

I was given a bistro garden table by my mum.

CeraUnaVolta · 17/06/2025 10:56

These suggestions are all wonderful ideas that I would love to receive myself, but they are not right for my very dear friend. I’m still thinking, if any more suggestions.
Its so hard, for a 50 year old who is lucky to have everything she needs.
