What can I read next to my 11yo?

I’m stuck what to read next to DS at bedtime. I need ideas please.

Our current book is Voyage to the Centre of the Earth.

Not Terry Pratchett, the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings as DH has those covered.

At 11, 12 I did PG Wodehouse, Jerome K Jerome, My family and other animals, Darling Buds of May, possibly All Creatures... - I like doing light, funny stuff just before bed.

PG Wodehouse is a great idea.

DS is really into science, which I’m not, so something lighthearted would be good common ground.

Agatha Christie so you can chat about whodunnit. I guess DH has bagsied the Hitchhikers Guide already. I loved Who Sir, Me Sir? by KM Peyton but most of her books are a bit girly. Some Dickens might work? The Rumpole books are good too, although possibly a bit too dated now.

That's my favourite book! Love Bill Bryson

I’m just impressed your DS still wants to be read to.

Bowling4soup · 16/06/2025 14:29

I’d reccomend Darren Shan - cirque du freak series

This was the age I was introduced to John Wyndham by our class teacher reading The Chrysalids to us.

Thank you for the ideas. I’ve made a list. The library had some Jeeves books, so I’ll start with those.

I’m in my 40’s @Whistledown99 😁 Those aren’t books of my teenage years.

I’m making the most of DS still wanting us to read to him. He’s in year 6, so maybe that will change soon. He loves reading himself, so I aim for books he wouldn’t necessarily pick up himself. It’s also been fun reading books I’m curious about but wouldn’t prioritise for me.

And yes, DH has read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy to DS, plus the Red Dwarf books.

I'm still thinking about what I read at 11-14. Watership Down, Marian Keyes, The Life of Pi, Dick King Smith did some for older readers which were good, Judy Bloom (my dad liked reading those to us), David Almond. I think the Thursday Murder club series would be fine. Since you're reading together more adult themes are ok

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 16/06/2025 16:07

I read Gerald Durrell to mine at a similar age which went down really well.

Oh then try,"Surely you're joking Mr Feynman"! That's fascinating and funny. We definitely read that one together probably Y7.
My DS is Y9 and still likes being read to, I'll do it for as long as he'll let me 😀
